Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

It's what they're there for. And if it's a pet...well, they have to deal with situations like that, too. A pet that'd kill neighbors chickens might also kill other pets.

Use Puffy as the bait, kill two birds with one trap as it were.

A pet that'd kill neighbors chickens might also kill other pets. Or other people's kids.
Just last week a family near here lost their 2-year-old son to a stray pit bull that they had adopted. Idiot parents for leaving the two alone together, but still.
Animals act on their instincts. Even domestic ones.
Get a trap 2J. The detective work might be fun. But there's only one way to catch/stop the killer.

Well, I called animal control. Said "Something has killed one of my chickens." Lady said "What is it?" I said "I don't know...could be a dog, but it could be a skunk." She said "We don't do skunks, you have to call wildlife management...they charge a fee to remove skunks."
Sigh.
My tax dollars at work.
We'll end up taking care of it ourselves.

Call wildlife management, tell 'em you think it's a raccoon and that you're worried about a rabies outbreak in the neighborhood.
It could happen...

When we had to get the raccoon out of our fireplace, we wound up calling an animal rescue charity. They came within a an hour or two of our call, and at night too.
You know, it is possible that whatever made the track last night is not the same animal that did the killing a few nights ago. I would suggest keeping up the detective work and seeing if you get the same tracks night after night, or possibly something else showing up and leaving a track.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
That's a good idea.
I like the loose sand idea...it'll leave a better print. Kinda fishy, though...that the critter was nosing around the coop door...
I also put in a request for a live trap on my BA CHEF egroup...someone might have one I can borrow.

mrsnad, the Principal at the Catholic School our kids attended said that she'd been told by a couple of kids that some other kids had said the 's' swear, and the 'f' word. The 's' swear was "stupid", and the 'f' word was fart. ;o) So she was always careful to get the full story before she started punishing a kid for what another kid said they overheard them say.
I have called down kids here if I heard them say words that we don't say in our house. I only ever had to tell them once. Even our older boys' friends (ages 22-26) still know that some words just are not used here, and they respect that.

The jedis know some words that they are never allowed to use, Steve and I don't use them. Then there are some mildly off-color words that we *do* use occasionally and it scandalizes the jedis immensely. LOL!! They can't say those words either, until they're 18!
I think it's hysterical! LOL!!

I like the loose sand idea, too.
Was there just the two tracks on the flour? That seems odd to me too... I would expect an animal walking through the flour to leave more tracks than that. Unless it was too "out of place" and made the animal leery of walking on it.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
There were other tracks, but they weren't very clear. And there was rain on it too, so that might have obscured a lot.
I'll do the sand thing tonight.

Black Hawk just flew over. Didn't circle, but came down real low over the house.
Love that thunk-thunk-thunk!

My mother just called to say that she fell down and thinks she may have sprained / broken her elbow.
I told my sister to deal with it because I am swamped with work that must get done today.
May God forgive me for the resentment I feel towards my own mom. But one of the first things she said when she claled me was "It's my right arm, so I can't do anything."
Which is the equivalent of saying "You think you were doing a lot before, huh?"

Oh, I've seen some HUGH skunks! We saw one in W. VA once that was at least 1' across the back which was completely white! I'd only seen skunks that were small and had a white stripe down the back that was, as the most, 4" wide. You couldn't even see the black on this one until he turned away and we saw it from the side.
