The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

That's a really strange firewall.... What's it trying to accomplish?

It alerts me everytime IE is trying to send info or someone is trying to get info. When I signed on last night I told IE not to send any personal info. When I turned that off, it was okay.

g'mornin' everybody

and g'nad: bite me

I just don't know if I could do away with an opossum or a skunk. Coon, yes...one attacked my brother when I was a kid (it was supposedly a pet). I pulled it off and have borne a grudge ever since.

But opossums are our only native marsupial and I think they're just so spunky and clever, to show all those teeth so violently then play dead when they realize it's futile! I've always liked opossums. And unlike a coon, I don't think they could actually get in the coop without me leaving it open. Same with a skunk and honestly! Who woulda thought there would be a skunk in my suburban neighborhood!?

Used to, I would always see armadillos in my surroundings in Texas. And horned toads. Slowly but surely they armadillos disappeared to the point where they became rare and the horned toads disappeared completely.

So I say, here in a neighborhood, live and let live. If I do my part (shut up the coop at night), a skunk or an opossum won't be a threat.

But I could sure shoot a coon and stuff it in the slow-cooker, no problem.

:-)

Not that I could tell...the girls are fine.

I can't see any tracks because the sand on the outside of the coop is packed down from the rains we got recently. I'll set the flour board up after we put the girls in for the night.

Baked Raccoon
Racoon with Yams

What you need:

1 fat coon, undressed, cleaned well
2 Onions, quartered
2 Stalks celery, whole
4 Cloves garlic, chopped
6 Louisiana Yams(Sweet Potatoes), boiled
Salt n' Cayenne pepper to taste

From The Belile Estate Kitchen's

What you do:

First you gotta catch them coon, then you gotta undress it, and cut into serving size pieces. Put them pieces in a large Dutch Oven with all them seasonings and enough water to cover by 5 or 6 inches. Put them pot over them medium hot fire.
Lightly salt them water and boil until tender. Do not over cook.
Remove them coon from them water, put him in a large baking pan.
Place them sweet potatoes around the coon meat. Season to taste
using them salt n' Cayenne Pepper. Bake 'em up at 350 Degrees F. for about 30 to 45 minutes.
Is sweet n' juicy, no?

Heh! I'd do it too...I really carry a grudge. Mean vile creatures, despite all their tidy hand-washing crap.

Good mornin' everyone!

Sorry for the disappearing act last night, but my wireless adaptor died. I moved my entire computer, desk and all, to the living room last night to get a signal and no luck.

I hope to be back up and running tonight.

2J - I hope we figure out who the culprit is soon!

Got lots and lots of payroll today, so I'll pop in and out of here as time permits.

I'm a little surprised that I've never had raccoons or possoms in the barn... there's plenty out there they could get into, and I can't keep them out.

I think it's probably the dogs being around, even though they are mostly in at night.

Heh heh!

I've got a feeling it is a coon, though...it was violent and I can't see a skunk or opossum doing that kinda violence and I CAN see a coon doing it after seeing one attack my brother. I mean it went *after* him...I'd pull it off and it'd go after him again! The owner ran over and got it and stuffed it in a cage..we went home and my brother had deep scratches all on his arms and legs.

Ew, eat the coon? I bet they taste dreadful, they eat garbage when they can't get chicken. We used to have a problem with coons getting into our trash but once we moved to a place with a real garage to keep the cans in that stopped. Used to have to clean up spilt garbage at least twice a month, the vermin.

Yes, and those same chickens will eat poop when given a chance.

Don't get me started on shrimp and catfish.
