Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
|
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

The attitudes that bug me most are what my Dad would call "every creep for himself". Heh...
Now...I agree that gubmit sanctioned welfare is out of control. But there are those here that seem to think there should be NO charity, period. Anyone that can't make it without any help from other human beings doesn't deserve to live.
That's just sick. And it's certainly not Christian. But one of the threads yesterday was essentially saying that those who don't have family to support them have chosen to be that way and aren't deserving of the help of "good" people. And that God rewards the good...so if you're poor, that's a sign you probably are a bad human being.
I had to stop reading.

Well he is an idiot. Hopefully someday he'll realize how sad and lonely his life is.
Whew! Done with work, just finishing off here before heading home...

Anyone that can't make it without any help from other human beings doesn't deserve to live.Exactly... I'm seeing that attitude on FR, as well as some others that tick me off, more and more, and I'm seeing less and less thoughtful analysis.
It used to be, "back in the day", that someone would post an article and within the first 10 or 20 comments FReepers would dissect and analyze and provide links to other articles and bits of information that might reflect on the original article. That just doesn't happen very much any more, and it's a great loss IMHO.

Every person has his or her own talents, Rosie. You know you have em a plenty, they just may be different from others' talents!

I'm coming to the realization that my political views and those of the majority of posters on FR are no longer compatible. It's they who have gone astray, Bear - not you.
Somewhere along the line it became tres chic to be a hard-nosed conservative with no tolerance or care for anyone other than the individual. Every man for himself, as it were.
As cheesy as it may sound to them out there, I choose to be a compassionate conservative.

Heh. I know. Somebody making good money that doesn't think they can support children? That's just dumb. Especially dumb to then jump on you for showing them how silly they are. [sigh]

Long day, huh?
I'm almost 100% sure we'll be closed tomorrow, but they told us to call in the morning to be sure.
As for the booger-for-brains on the other thread, he's a "looser" as they say. ;-D

Well...FWIW I think the articles posted/linked too have become more tabloid than they used to be.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
That just doesn't happen very much any more, and it's a great loss IMHO.I'll give a big double-AMEN to that, Bear.
There isn't debate anymore, just attacks and name-calling. We're becoming more like DU every day.

And the guy I originally posted to wasn't the one who attacked me! It was 2 other FReepers.

Yah, Bear... I know what you mean. I started lurking in around 98. We have always had our share of knuckledraggers... but what I think is happening is that they've become louder and regular thoughtful people have become quieter.
There's only a small handful of them, and it would only take a small handful of us to fairly effectively counter them. I think.

They definitely have, chica.
There were always some really funny articles and stuff back in the day, but the best ones were the threads that were hijacked from the original topic and turned into something else entirely. And everyone laughed at it at no one else's expense.
It's a pity everyone takes themselves so seriously these days.

In fact... more to the point... Remember how nuts things got around here in 99? In the lead-up to "Y2K" things got positively *brutal*. It was just plain crazy... so much so that it was finally the thing that pushed me over the edge to register and fight with some of the nutbars that were posting all of their end-of-the-world crapola.
In some ways... things may have changed, but it many ways they have not. In crises, the fringes seem to control the dialog. We just have to speak up.

There has to be quite a number of FReepers who feel the same way we do, but like Ramius said - we've just stayed away or not posted in order to keep out of the fray.

We're becoming more like DU every day. I wouldn't go *that* far... :-)
We're still way better moderated, and way more under control than that zoo. I can't even stand to go there anymore. It really is totally *vile*.
