The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Pentecostal wimmin don't wear hats. Their hair's too big.

Since when did big hair stop anyone from wearing a big hat to church???

I don't know ... there was a brief period of time when all three of us had quizzical "did you want to know anything else?" looks on our faces.

Interviews are so awful.

I would like to get this job. I loved working downtown ... loved the restaurants and walking over to my bank to get money. We need the health insurance, among other things. And they pay for covered parking, which is cool. I would work from 11am - 8pm, and that is also cool.

I have to put it out of my mind, and apply to the next batch of jobs.

Agreed... interviews suck. I haven't even been on that side of an interview for a very long time... and don't know if I could cope. If this year's SOX adventure doesn't go well... I may get to find out. :-)

But I don't like being on the hiring side either. The whole experience is excruciating. The funny (sick) thing is that it's also almost completely useless for trying to figure out whether the person is a good match for the company or not.

You, in essentially "hiring" an employer do not get any sort of true picture of what working there would be like... and they likewise get no useful picture of what you'd be like as an employee. All we get to find out is how talented somebody is at being an interviewer/ interviewee... and that's not something that's ever going to happen again.

For my last four (out of five total) hires in the last year or so this is why I've just gone to that temp agency. They've reliably sent a decent short list of people that pretty well fit the job description. I ask for one to show up... and they do... and we get to test-drive them for a while and they get to test-drive us for a while.

On a couple of occasions I've asked them to send somebody else, sometimes refining or re-defining the requirements a little. But on the whole this has been a much more hassle-free way to get good people... and the people we hired from them have been just outstanding.

Incidentally... I just had somebody in helpdesk support in SF quit this week. Gave his two weeks notice on Monday. Not an unexpected development. Nice guy... not highly motivated, but seriously talented. He wants to get out of IT and into racing cars. I can't help with that. :-)

I'm actually not sure yet that I'm going to even replace him. But that's another story.

...Bard of the Hobbit Hole...

Bard prepares to fire his trusty black arrow at Smaug's weak spot as it attacks Lake-town

"The dragon swooped once more lower than ever, and as he turned and dived down his belly glittered white with sparkling fires of gems in the moon - but not in one place. The great bow twanged. The black arrow sped straight from the string, straight for the hollow by the left breast where the foreleg was flung wide. In it smote and vanished, barb, shaft, and feather, so fierce was its flight. With a shriek that deafened men, felled trees, and split stone, Smaug shot spouting into the air, turned over and crashed down from on high in ruin."

Anyone heard from Ruthie since her last post? I'm guessing she's lost power.

Ruthy called Hair a couple of times (read further down). She lost power and a tree fell on her privacy fence.

AFAIK that's the last we heard. Hopefully she'll call again when she gets a chance. Sam too.

I understand. Mrs. and I were talkin' about that yesterday. It ain't purty.

We'll be okay if everything goes as planned and nothing unusual happens.

And so it begins...

Sounds like you did well to me, despite System Manager Guy's lack of social skills. ;-)

Though even just reading that, my heart was in my throat, 'cause I have no idea what exactly I would say to those questions. Eek! I so hate interviews. And I dunno if mine will be one on one or before a panel - last job I actually got, the interview was in a whole roomful of people. Unnerving. I sat at the end of a conference table and they went around the circle firing questions at me. I did OK then, but I hadn't been out of work for as long as I have now, and felt pretty sure of myself. Now...I dunno.
