I don't know ... there was a brief period of time when all three of us had quizzical "did you want to know anything else?" looks on our faces.

Interviews are so awful.

I would like to get this job. I loved working downtown ... loved the restaurants and walking over to my bank to get money. We need the health insurance, among other things. And they pay for covered parking, which is cool. I would work from 11am - 8pm, and that is also cool.

I have to put it out of my mind, and apply to the next batch of jobs.

Agreed... interviews suck. I haven't even been on that side of an interview for a very long time... and don't know if I could cope. If this year's SOX adventure doesn't go well... I may get to find out. :-)

But I don't like being on the hiring side either. The whole experience is excruciating. The funny (sick) thing is that it's also almost completely useless for trying to figure out whether the person is a good match for the company or not.

You, in essentially "hiring" an employer do not get any sort of true picture of what working there would be like... and they likewise get no useful picture of what you'd be like as an employee. All we get to find out is how talented somebody is at being an interviewer/ interviewee... and that's not something that's ever going to happen again.

For my last four (out of five total) hires in the last year or so this is why I've just gone to that temp agency. They've reliably sent a decent short list of people that pretty well fit the job description. I ask for one to show up... and they do... and we get to test-drive them for a while and they get to test-drive us for a while.

On a couple of occasions I've asked them to send somebody else, sometimes refining or re-defining the requirements a little. But on the whole this has been a much more hassle-free way to get good people... and the people we hired from them have been just outstanding.

Incidentally... I just had somebody in helpdesk support in SF quit this week. Gave his two weeks notice on Monday. Not an unexpected development. Nice guy... not highly motivated, but seriously talented. He wants to get out of IT and into racing cars. I can't help with that. :-)

I'm actually not sure yet that I'm going to even replace him. But that's another story.
