The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Evening everyone...I've been looking at apt bldgs today, and toured one model. I'm debating whether to go with that one (it's near a park, near stores, and near some friends) or another larger one (2 bedroom! guestroom? storage? study? armory? all of the above?) similarly priced that isn't near any of those.

Then there's the one that would be adequate but ain't worth no steenking $500/mo. $300 maybe. If I talked 'em down I might take it...

Thanks for the prayers.

Considering the first two questions were ones I couldn't answer without a computer in front of me

Urgh! That *so* sounds like something a school would pull.

I think you should call them back and say now that you've taken the pencil-n-paper exam you'd like to know when you can schedule the PRACTICAL portion of the exam so that you can demonstrate your actual skill.

Harumph.

Rosie, I've hired 6 folks in the last few months(series growth spurt here), so here's my perspective.

In talking with folks, I/we are looking for people who have the technical talent, or most of it since we can fill in the holes for candidates who fit otherwise. One of the major things we're also looking at is personality matches with us and the existing staff. Show 'em your stuff technically, but just relax and talk as well.

I interviewed a guy last week who once turned down a job, though he was unemployed at the time, because it would have involved helping outsource stuff overseas. I only learned that because we were just chatting about "stuff". He earned big points for this seemingly offhand remark.

Professional dress is important, but you've got that covered I believe. We look at interviewees in with the "can we put him/her in front of a client?" viewpoint.

I hope this is/was helpful. I'll be looking forward to hearing about the next step in your search.

Well...hopefully my answers at least reflect the fact that the questions weren't Greek to me - and maybe that's all they were tryin' to find out.

They did something similar at my last place of work, only maybe not quite as tricky...except that it had more questions on stuff other than Windows, most of which I couldn't answer.

I'm still more worried about the personal interaction part of the interview. I didn't really get asked many questions where I could relax and just talk...so I have come across as not much fun. Only time will tell.

MAY have come across as not much fun, I mean. Not a definite. ;-)

But if I make it to the next level, I'll likely have more of a chance to just talk. I think at this point, they just wanted to thin the herd a bit, and then do real interviews, which should be easy after this...if I'm one of the final folks.

Thanks, Rosie. I haven't been able to get in touch with them because the phone networks were down earlier. We'll try again this evening.

I guess I'll read down the thread how the interview went, but I was praying for you this afternoon!

Steve went to get his hair cut.

Yeah, this is pretty unusual...giving us a brand new dryer (and it's just a dryer, btw...I thought it was both but it's not.) They said they were going to give me their old one when they gave me the deep freeze, remember? But then they backed out of that.

So I still am not sure it's from them...it's real unusual.

Whoever it was paid for the gas hookup type and the delivery, Steve's going to pick it up and we have electric...so we'll have about $150 left over...

*Sigh*

I'm watching streaming video from New Orleans...news people trying to identify submerged neighborhoods. Wonder if any of those people thought to bottle up some water and if they were able to keep it out of the flood.

The hurricane thread is into Red Cross bashing now.

That makes it sound even more like it might be them.

FWIW, as I thought about this after my last post about it today, is that maybe gifts like the pool and the dryer might be only way they feel they have to send you good will, since other contact has gotten so strained. When you can't speak and can't reconcile, at least send a dryer.

That's my take.

I swear, Luke talked from the moment I walked in until 30 minutes ago when I got him in bed...

He should join the debate team.

Evening Rosie - We're sure you did fine on the exam and you doubtless came across as a professional that others would enjoy working with.

Evening OT - time to break out the grid paper, straight edge and No. 2 pencil (with optional eraser). Sniff, I miss those days.
