Best Music to Drive By

I was just sitting here thinking about a 1500 mile drive I have to make, and contemplating burning a couple CDS for the drive. I found some music that would make it more interesting but not enough. So here is the question.

If you were going to drive from Phoenix to Indy, you were in a sports car, what music would you want to have on your cd?

Try some Brazilian jazz..my favorite is Nando Lauria. Excellent guitar, if a bit heavy on the cover songs (beatles "If I Fell" is actually my favorite).

Another thing I was thinking of...

I'm quite partial to female vocalists with strong voices... I really like Evanesence, Renessance, but I think that my favorite might be Animal Logic. The first album is their best, IMHO. Plus, you've got the amazing pairing of Stanley Clarke on bass and Stewart Copeland on drums!

All three are terrific for driving music.

My best travel companion is my MP3 with Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, George Thorogood' Bob Seger and (surprise?) Norah Jones. She plays a guitar too.

Those are all good choices, including Norah Jones.

Yeah...John Hiatt is truly one of the greats, little known unfortunately. People don't realize that he is a long time foundation in the music industry. I've seen him in concert solo and with the Goners. My preference is with the band. They rock!

I have been thinking about your post as I do my own 7000 mile drive. But since I have not always had access to the internet, my reply has been delayed.

I would highly recommend books on tape/CDs. There are a ton of books to choose from, and they totally absorb me and make the time go really quickly. Check out Amazon and books on tape places; often they are sold used and work just as well.

I would also recommend educational CDs from the Teaching Company, on line. Again, there is a variety of topics: from music history to philosophy to history etc. I have enjoyed Robert Greenberg's history of music CDs for some time, but a Freeper also turned me on to history CDs by Rufus Fears, and I pass along the recommendation.

I can't listen to the education CDs one right after another, but one or two a day are great, and they provide a nice variety from music and the books on CD.

Give them a try.

I gave my sister the posthumously released Zevon album as a Christmas present last year.

It was definitely worth listening to.

Another great CD is the last one released by Joey Ramone, which was recorded as he was undergoing chemotherapy.

I was never a huge Ramones fan, but that last independent effort was fantastic, especially his cover of Louis Armstrong's Wonderful World.

I always think they never play the Floyd everyone loves....why is that?

'Cause the best Floyd songs are all over 10 minutes long.

Add to the road music list: the flip side of Floyd's "Meddle", Echoes. Also, if you like long instumentals, Autobahn by Kraftwerk and Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield.
