Toilet VS Restroom - Our changing culture( Vanity )
Me | 07/24/2005 | Me

VANITY --- VANITY --- VANITY

During the past few weeks I have traveled via air and passed through several major U.S. airports. I noticed in almost all cases the word "Restroom" has been replaced with "Toilet". I spoke to a courtsey person in two airports and both said that they were "requested" to change to a more international word such as "Toilet".

In architectural terms toilet is the correct usage for the room. The nominally white throne you sit upon is a water closet.

I have always associated the word toilet as slang. I know it is a correct word, but restroom seems more polite. I thought it was another example of our ever-changing culture.

I don't have a problem with Restroom. If I ever went to America I'd be sure to buy a dictionary so I knew what the essential words translated to. Toilet is a French word. In England we prefer loo (also a French derivative) or bog (I think very Anglo-Saxon)

Imagine the distress of Baltimorians searching in vain for a "bahtroom" anywhere in this great land.

It may be more accepted worldwide but if I were ever sitting in a restaurant and one of my kids said, "I'm going to the toilet" I'd smack them silly.

Toilet is a French word.

Toilette, in one sense “the act or process of dressing,” generally not far advanced in The Toilet of Venus.

Why would you want to go into the toilet room to rest?

"toilet" is recognized by speakers of many languages. Yes, restroom is more polite, but it is an Americanism. People from all over use airports, so it needs to be easily recognizable.

I prefer the terms "Ladies" and "Gentlemen", like they use in the better Las Vegas hotels. And forget "unisex" restrooms--- I won't enter.

when i was a child, there actually were "restrooms".

ladies got fatigued while shopping and went into a restroom to rest.

the restroom was the outer room; the inner room had the toilets and washbasins.

the outer room included sofas and armchairs.

i was about 4 or 5 years and my brother a year younger.
