In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

smarmy \SMAR-mee\ adjective
1. revealing or marked by a smug, ingratiating, or false earnestness *
2. of low sleazy taste or quality

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
"I was so disappointed to hear you didn't get that promotion," said Kit, using a smarmy tone of voice that made me fume.

Did you know?
Something "smarmy" will often ooze with self-satisfaction and insincerity. Much like its synonyms "unctuous" and "slick," "smarmy" has a history that starts with a meaning of literal slipperiness or oiliness. The verb "smarm" appeared in English in the mid-19th century. Etymologists don't know where it came from, but they do know that it meant "to smear," "to gush," or sometimes "to make smooth or oily." A few decades later, use of "smarm" was extended to sometimes mean "to use flattery." The adjective "smarmy" appeared in the early 20th century. At first meaning "insincerely flattering" or "smug," it later took on an additional meaning: "sleazy."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The first "news" story out of Canada I've been able to enjoy in ages. It's almost worth a trip to Winnipeg!

Hi, Vastie:

Smarmy is such a perfect adjective
It flows off the tongue, yet is hardly invective
While describing the Left's lifestyle and mindset
That sounds pretty and Tantric, yet does nothing worthwhile
Kind of like a Tree Hugger or a Chia Pet

They Support The Military, yet loathe those who fight
When throwing Tax Dollars doesn't fix a problem
Then condoms just might!
If the NEA actually Educated. It's such a Goblin
And Mugabe doesn't kill dozens of African Tribes first!

Forty years of "It's for the children!"
Has worn quite thin between L.A. and New York
It's done nothing but boost Dental Torque
Of Blue Collars and those who work from nine to five
And go to the polls to crush that annoying nullibicit jive!

"A Woman's Right To Choose" when put to the test
It's gonna lose. Murder may be convenient, though
Messy. Besides, it's not Hip! Just ask the Jews
Unless it's subsidized, thanks to the NAACP and Reverend Jesse!

"If you take away guns. You take away crime!"
That just doesn't work or make sense, even if it rhymes
Even though Gun Grabbers have tried for years to make the numbers a Golden Fix
When everyone knows that it's better to be tried by twelve than carried by six!

Who's going to beam Scotty up??

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor James Doohan, best known as Scotty, the feisty, Scottish-accented chief engineer on television's original "Star Trek" series, died on Wednesday at his home in Redmond, Washington, his manager said. He was 85.

Rest in peace.
