Excellent choice. He'd probably be even better than Connery in that part.

Can anyone say Star Trek III?

Remember...

I think Snape killed the part of Voldermorts soul that was in the locket.

That is my impression. He may have also killed Dumbledore, but a murder was committed, and that was the requirement for making the soul splitting thingy.

Can anyone say Star Trek III?

I didn't see STIII, but I get where you're going...DD isn't really dead, now he has his own horcrux. I do not think he would allow that to happen. He referred to the creation of horcruxes as the darkest of dark arts. The soul should remain intact.

He is dead, folks.

The whole horcrux creation reminds me so much of Sauron's Ring. As long as the Ring was intact, his soul was alive and he could return--not easily, just as Voldemort's return was difficult.

...if Snape was truly evil he would have followed the orders of Voldermort.

I don't know how an Unbreakable Vow works, but I think Snape had to step in, in part because of the oath he'd made with Narcissa.

The singing Phoenix had me thinking that he was shedding healing tears...Dumbledore suffered an injury from destroying the ring, he could have suffered an injury while destroying the locket. I don't believe for a minute that DD was fooled by some fake locket.

Also if Dumbledore has gone into hiding then it makes sense that his Phoenix would also leave and go with him. DD being presumed dead makes it easy for Snape and Malfoy to be accepted into Voldermore circle. DD very own sleeper cell if you will.

Xerimus totalus, for mice...

Arborus majica is handy if you find yourself in a forest (or anywhere else with wand-quality wood). It allows you to turn ordinary wood into a wand, although you will be limited to some rudimentary spells since the wand would lack a core.

My kid came up with that one!

About Snape and Lily--I admit it, I read at some fanfic sites, and there is a sorta neato thing wherein if you rearrange the letters of Severus Snape's name you get "Perseus Evans" (Evans being Lily's last name before she got married.) LOTS and LOTS of theories about how the two of them might be related, and that is why she is nice to him in the memories, though he is such a POS.

Since I feel so certain that Snape will turn out to be a good guy, he'll probably end up pure evil.

How long until the next book? Two, three years??!

He is dead, folks.

I think you are right, but if so, it was planned.

About the last remaining relic being the sword--you're right! I read someone today venturing that when Tom Riddle controlled Ginny in CoS, and said he "poured his soul" into her, he made her a horcrux. I have always thought that the Weasly's must be some distant relative of Gryffindor becuase of the red hair (everyone comments on it), their very strong bravery and loyalty, and in the PoA movie (which Rowling consulted on), Ron takes the candy and makes a lion roar (remember, Neville makes the elephant noise, and Harry sounds like a train). So, if this was true, Ginny would be a remnany of the Gryffindor bloodline, wouldn't she? And how awful for Harry to have to kill her, or at least consider the option!

I really am convinced it was planned out just as it happened, with some surprises--I don't think DD had any idea how Draco got the Death Eaters into Hogwarts, he seemed pretty surprised about that. I'd love to spend a few hours in the Room of Requirement. Just walk in and find a copy of book 7 sitting next to a comfy chair...

I for one am not going to rest easy until book seven is at the publishers. The one great genius of Rowling's is always being pitch perfect with the characters. She gets caught off guard occasionally in minute details of the mystery plotting, but the characters always do what, in retrospect, they had to do.

I'm sure that the publishers have a plot outline in a safe somewhere, but no one but Rowling could write it the way it needs to be written. Considering how many times her style has been trashed, I am astounded at how clean the final chapters of this book are. Some of the endings were so confusing I had to read them over just to figure out what happened. This one is a marvel.

I seem to remember that DD had a twin brother that worked in the bar. Can someone ask a 12 year old? I might be mistaken. I don't want to fan the flames of conspiracy theories, but I wonder if that plays into DD's death somehow?

I also agree that maybe all of Voldermort's victims will come back to life at some point before it's all over - somehow escape that cave from the fifth book maybe?

Now, if Harry was one of the soul shoe boxes, that might explain the prophacy. Voldermort could never truly live again with that part of his soul until Harry no longer has it. Presumably, Harry would have to die for Voldermort to get it back.

What gets me is that it's diminishing returns on the soul shoe boxes. The first time he makes one, he has 50% of his soul remaining and 50% stored away. The next time he makes one, he can only donate 25%, etc. By the time he makes his 7th box, it must only contain <1% of his soul. As such, I wonder if the first one he made was the most valuable?

Clever lad!

I learned most of what little Latin I know from dinosaur names. He's got a good start!

He's a pip, frightening smart, not yet eight years old. His interest in Latin started with dinosaurs! If grammar school "educators" ever realized just how quickly kids pick up on things like that, Latin wouldn't be such a near-dead language.

DD referred to his brother a couple of the times in the books, but I'm not sure where and I don't remember much about him. I seem to recall that he's dead, but I'm not sure. Unfortunately, our entire HP series is currently on loan to various friends and family members (except for HBP). I don't think any of the dead characters will come back. Rowling has said, "Dead is dead--even in the wizarding world." I think DD will make an appearance in book 7, now that his portrait is in the Headmaster's office at the school. That's an interesting point you make, about the pieces of his soul having varied value. I haven't given that any thought.

And now, I'm off to bed! See you later folks.

I am starting to wonder about the potion (poison) DD drank in the cave. He said "it wasn't a health drink" and it obviously weakened him badly.

What if DD realized that there was no antidote for the potion and, realizing he was going to die anyhow, mangaged to arrange things so that his death would have the greatest benefit for the good side?

Yup. That was pretty obvious from the way she reacted after the dementor attack in OOTP. No way she could have known about Azkaban or dementors if she wasn't.

It would also explain her intense dislike for anything magical. Understandable in it's own way.
