As I have witnessed the last terror event, this overall picture came to my mind and I am sure a few others of us too.
1993 WTC bombed, damage and death but no collapse. Then the bombings in Africa..more damage, collapse and death, effective.
9-11 the colmination of the past 2 "practices".
2004 Madrid trains above ground bombing effective but could there be more?
London July 2005, bombing mostly below ground. Somewhat effective but still not "there". Were they trying for the collapse of downtown London?

NYC subway has a vulnerability. Some of the tubes run close to the underground water tunnels that bring in fresh water from upstate NY. Worst scenario is a subway train exploding near this water line, crack it and cause flooding in the entire subway system. If the NY subway system is knocked out by three foot of water (which takes out the signal sensors on the tracks) for several months, the economic toll on NYC will be immense. Most of the workers in the financial center and other businesses rely on the subway to commute into the city. If the workers cannot get to their jobs, most financial activities come to a halt.

So glad that you told them every thing you know, if this happens, it is all on your head!!!!! However I am sure that "they" probably know this too. Just remember "Loose Lips sink Ships" That was well known during World War II, too bad that the idiots that populate America today don't have a clue! Yea, get the news out! When we get hit again, most will understand! Loose lips sink America!

I worry more about the freeway system here in Southern California. An attack on the Metro trains would be a hassle for commuters. Somebody goes after the big freeway interchanges...things would get ugly.

Where there's smoke ... they arrested a cell in Lodi, not too far from San Francisco (~70 or 80 miles). The area around there is the SF as the Midlands are to London. How many more cells still lurk? Of note, there are a number of Pakistani heavy mosques right here in the Bay Area, preaching what?

Just like they they *nearly* cracked the Picadilly tunnel last Thursday! Anyone who thinks the only objective was carnage and psychological impact ought to think again!

Now think of our cities and rail system...

You mean those that are run by the "government" and the ones that seem to always be out of money. Those?

I say let em fail, and we'll be better off in the long run.

The subway tunnels are not cut through granite. City streets were build above them, rather than the subways being built below them.

The Alaska Railroad has been on alert since London. Even before. If they hit the Alaska Railroad, well, it would be like that time a dozen oil tankcars got off the rail and went in the creek. What a mess.

If you damage the tunnel seriously enough, the line will be taken out for a while. 9/11 resulted in closures for months, of tunnels in TriBeCa / lower Broadway. It may take a while, even though the explosion Thursday was - relatively - a dud, to get the Picadilly Line open again in that area. The tunnel is currently shored up and there is still a concern about collapse.

Keep your own fears to yourself. This isn't news and obviously, you haven't the glimmer of an idea, just how much has been and is being done, to keep N.Y.C. subways and tunnels and bridges safe.

Unfortunately this scenario was published in a Civil Engineering Journal a year after 9/11. MTA was suppose to reroute the trains away from these water tunnels. If this happens, there is no excuse for the authorities.
