The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

They were slack about getting wall paint on the trim. And they didn't even use a scrub-able paint in the bathroom. They didn't bother to touch up when they didn't exactly get good coverage the first time 'round.

The room is painted!

For all the money Mr. Darcy shelled out on Wickham, he might as well have set him up with a sugar plantation and shipped him off to Barbados or something.

Afternoon OT - telephone hasn't been working too good, static kept us off line. I just finished checking the phone line and found it was under tension, found where it been lodged under a bit of bark apparently it was tight across another line the neigbors yard. I used a bamboo pole and pushed out from under the bark and it flipped up, relieving the tension. I have no idea if that was the problem or not but static is off the line and we're logged back on. Now to look for a king size squirrel that must have been been jumping on the wire. OB

Just finished cleaning the brush and roller.

Got pizza dough going in the machine (kinda tired of hamburger. The rest of the stuff is going in the freezer.)

Guess who's hooked on Lost?

I figured out how to burn them to cds that our dvd player can read. Unfortunately it takes forever so we can't just sit down and watch ten episodes.

Very interesting watching again from the beginning, now that I know everybody and understand their motives a bit.

Heh heh... one day I'll have to introduce you to my DVD collection....

Luckily, it is the kind of series that you can watch over and over again and still see things you missed the first time.

Yup... looking for clues and stuff now...

Have to find a way to split 24/25 into two seperate files, as one it's too big to fit on my cds.

If you do a Google search, there are some freeware/shareware tools out there that will split AVI or MPG files for you... I've had so-so luck using them, though.

Yeah, that's what I've found with various video manipulation software. I'll look into it, it'll take a week to burn the other episodes, anyway.

I use a program called Ulead DVD Movie Factory, which is pretty flexible. It has some bugs, but works pretty well overall. It came with my TV tuner card, which is a Hauppauge Win-TV PVR250.

Duh, I didn't think of this until just now: check out Ulead's website for a free trial download of their software. Despite the emphasis on DVDs, it will burn VCDs too. The trial works for 30 days.

Hey, cool! If it's any faster than Nero...

Probably not any faster, but it will let you edit the video before putting it on disk; cutting out commercials or splitting 2-hour episodes in half, for instance.

Hehe, the commercials are precut for me.

I just wish I could figure out why episode 19 is twice as large as the other episodes even though it's no longer. Someone must have encoded it funny.

Probably so... does it display larger when you play it? It may be at a higher resolution, or a higher sample rate. Ulead will let you adjust those settings too so that you can fit it on disk.

U-lead is the program Clare used to create her Anime music videos.

On my computer, I just watch things fullscreen so I have no idea if the resolution is different. The audio/video quality seems the same.

The real problem are the French subtitles on episode 7 and 8. They're 'hard' subs, which means they're imposed on top of the video rather than 'soft' subs which you can disable. Haven't found alternate copies of those eps yet. Oh well. It's annoying and it tends to hide the subtitles for Sun and Jin, but that's ok.

If you can't find them elsewhere let me know, I'll send you the VCDs I already have.

It's a pretty powerful and flexible program! I don't think I have all the features figured out completely yet, and I've been using it to make DVDs for a while now.

Thanks :-) I think I can find them, at least for the permanent copy (though my conscience will probably prompt me to buy the dvds) but for our first pass...

I spent almost the entire day today working on Hobbit Hole knives, and packaging them for shipping. Have a total of eight packages to take to the post office, most going to multiple individuals.

Ecurbh, you can bump the following totals in the "score board":
CQB1SG +2
CQB3 +2
BK2 +9
BK3 +3
904S +15

I suppose we should also add "Gerber aircrew knife" +2, since it has our logo on it. One to our Navy FA-18 squadron, one to a AH-64 unit deploying in October.

I felt a lot more patriotic working on the knives than I normally would just shooting off fireworks today.
