The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Oh dear! That's awful! Sounds like maybe your chain is a smidge too long or something. What do you think, Talon? Do you get a free tuneup within 30 days of buying it? If you do, I'd ask them to look at the chain and make sure it's the correct length and make sure your shifting is working okay.

There is a general rule not to use the largest chainring (the one in front) with the smallest cog (in the back). However, you should be able to use the smallest chainring with the smallest cog.

Perhaps the thing to do if that ever happens again is just shift to a different gear and see if the chain will re-seat itself.

Sounds like you had a really crummy day, sorry about that! I remember when I broke my chain, I had a nice long (~2 miles) walk to the bike shop. Since then, I've learned how to repair my chain if that ever happens again.

So I look at it, see the chain's loose

Crummy! But you're alive and stronger and that's always good.

When we get to the bke shop, it's healed itself

figgers.

You know that sick feeling you get when you know you're right but can't prove it? I paid the fine.

Argh!

The guy at the bike shop looked it over and pronounced it ok. I tried putting the chain back on myself but couldn't, but then in the car ir spontaneously fixed itself.

Ok, don't use largest chainring with smallest cog... but I don't think I was... hmm. And try shifting, ok. I did try that but only for about two feet, I couldn't get the bike to work at all.

That happened to me this morning...the chain fell off a gear into the space between two of them.

Just pushed that springy gadget beneath the gears to get a little slack and noodged the chain back onto the gear.

Hope that wan't too much technical jargon :p

Heh, I have a CD by the bluegrass group "Seldom Scene", and one of the songs is "You Better Get Right Or You're Gonna Get Left".

Ok here is the shots. Please forgive if I explain to much.
This is the rear derailer. Called that because it knocks the chain off the rails on command. The black cable going off the top of the picture) gets pulled or pushed in small amounts when you work the gear shifter. That moved the lower part of the assembly toward or away from the camera and then the chain walks itself up and down the gears. The the assembly is spring-loaded to push backward (to the left) to keep even tension on the chain no matter what gear it is on.

Like this...

If the cable adjustment is a little off it will move this unit just a little farther than the last gear. Then intermittently the chain might fall off the bottom gear. It can do this off the top gear also. Not using the bottom work to stop it if that is the issue. To put the chain BACK on simply
-move the gear shifter up a few gears
-push the derailer as the picture shows
-hand place the chain on the front and rear gears as necessary
-Let the derailer go back to the the normal position (let go of it)
-lift the rear tire off the ground
-rotate the pedal a few times until the chain settles on a gear it likes

You tryin' to outdo the Governor of Virginia?

You know, he's a slimy tax-raising (lyin' about it in his campaign promises) RAT, but unlike sKerry, at least Mark Warner is a real athlete.

This accident didn't happen because he was a goober pretending to be a jock.

Thanks! Great explanation. Now I feel like I have some idea what happened.

Maybe if it ever happens again I can fix it myself and not have to call for a pickup.

Okay, so I want to capture a screen shot from a DVD. But it's goobering up in Photoshop and now won't post as a gif (even though I saved it that way).

Are there special super secret instructions I'm missing somewhere?

It looks good on your screen but it won't post? Is it uploaded?

Yeah, I had a couple of problems. This is what I did.

It wouldn't let me copy it, so I did a screen shot (like we did with the South Park characters). But it took me several tries to actually get the whole picture to post.

Then when I'd crop, it would shift the image. I finally got that to work.

I saved it in gif format. This is what I get:

Try saving it as a .jpg instead of a .gif.

Was this a windows media file? You can't take screenshots of those, even with printscreen. It just doesn't work.
