The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

we can produce good-quality pistol ammunition for under three dollars per fifty-round box

yup... standard pistol cartidges cost me between $.04-$.07 per cartridge, depending upon the projectile...

.357 Magnum in a Winchester 94 carbine is a very pleasant cartridge to shoot, very manageable.

Heh...so I can add yet another to my list o' things I'd like to try/own someday. Not good.

I was being too gentle with the lever-action, too. I'd like another try at that someday. I wasn't getting the casings expelled right.

I think they (or some weather weenie somewhere) thinks it'll reach hurricane strength by landfall.

Oh, lovely.

Yeah I had that problem a bit when I first got it. Got to get the right snap of the wrist down pat. Most gun manipulation (except triggers) requires a solid firm movement. People these days are use to plastic devices and keyboards so most new people I get out there are a bit timid at first with racking slides and bolts and working levers. Easy to get over that. You did only fire it a few times. I love the model 94 for it's classic stylish look. I got the .44 to drop a bear but I would not mind owning a .357 one.

Yeah, you've got to be kind of snappy with the action, or it doesn't work right. A lot of guns are like that.

you are a brave man... or a foolish one... ;o)...I prefer 45-70 or .400 Marlin fer that...

Blue Press... [sigh]

This month's cover isn't as good as some they've run in the past. I actually noticed the rifle she was posing with (a camo-stock Garand). That usually doesn't happen.

Do you cast your own bullets, or buy cast?

Yeah. Taking a bear with a .44 Mag, even in a carbine, isn't really for beginners. I think I'd want a real rifle cartridge, like you said.

Remember how proud I was when I fixed your chicken waterer...well, you can imagine how I feel now!

It's going through a defrost cycle right now and draining steadily into the pan!

I don't want to say "It's fixed" for sure...but I'm very optimistic.

buy them... with only one good hand, casting is just somethin' I don't care tuh deal with... still tryin' to find a reliable local source... there's a place nearby called "BushWacker Bullets"... a mom and pop outfit, but they're good I hear...

agree on the cover... a little disappointing...

Well, I think so too. It only took a dribble of it in my mop bucket and the jedis are walking around holding their noses IN THE HOUSE and I mopped the garage!

Well, now I've got a hugh glass bottle of Pine-Sol with a metal cap and I'm holding on to it!

Stop drooling over gun catalogs and give the whoevers a call! You said you were gonna do that if you hadn't heard from them by 10.

;-p

Did you guys get any storms? We did last night and it nearly blew one of our turbines off the roof! I just noticed it.

44 will do in all but the really big bears. 45-70 would go right though the bear and kill the one behind it too :D

Might get me a Marlin sometime too. So many toys so little time...

Heh...didn't help that I'd just fired the really heavy rifle. My arms were tired.

I gotta work on upper body strength if I'm gonna do rifles, I guess. Or stick with carbines... Hey, I learned me a new word today!
