The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

What were Mary and Pip up to when they joined the fellowship and who were they doing it to... Let's try to keep this a family thread.

What were Mary and Pip up to when they joined the fellowship and who were they doing it to. Why, they were stealing food out of Farmer Maggot's fields, that's what they were doing!
What stream flows past the roots of Old Man Willow?

Thorin's father Thrain.
Related question, what happened to good ol' Thrain?

Actually, no...that's from the movie, not the book.

Related question, what happened to good ol' Thrain? Died in Sauron's dungeons in Dol Guldur, he did!
But what did he give to Gandalf there before he died?

The map and the key.
Who discovered the secret of that map, and what was the secret?

Well, I'm not sure what you're fishing for here, but Elrond noticed the moon-letters and read them for the Company. They comprised a riddle, to the effect of "Stand at the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the last light of Durin's day will shine upon the keyhole."
But it was Frodo who deciphered the riddle.
What was the original purpose of the guard tower at Cirith Ungol, and who built it?

Frodo? Wrong book, man...
The guard tower was to keep a watch on Mordor, and it was built by Isildur. What was his brother's name and city?

Frodo? Wrong book, man... Duh! Of COURSE it was Bilbo. That was just a brain fart on my part.
Isildur's brother was Anarion. Their city would have been Osgiliath, yes? Because Minas Anor and Minas Ithil were just outpost fortresses when Osgiliath was at its height.
I confess, my knowledge is sketchy on those points.
Oh, a question...Who was it that proposed the riddle game in the chapter of The Hobbit titled "Riddles in the Dark"?

Nah, Osgiliath was the main city but Isildur built Minas Ithil, and Anarion built Minas Anor, later Minas Tirith.
Guess they had some issues, naming the cities for themselves.

Well, at least I knew Minas Ithil and Minas Anor, even if I wasn't sure of their status. =]
Doeth that mean we thould call him Ithildur now?

Why not? We already shot him full of so much lead...

Gollum?
As we all know the door to Moria said, 'Speak friend and enter.' But what did it REALLY say (in elvish).
To: TalonDJ
At some point you have to give them time to run off and recuperate.

Just got a movie from Netflix. I don't remember The Big Sleep being 3 hrs and 50 min long. (That's what it says on the jacket.)
