The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

The guides in the picture would be Whittaker and Unsoeld who climbed Everest with Whittaker, but I don't know which is which. You're right... it was also Unsoeld. In fact I think the name of the guide shack at Paradise was the "Whittaker and Unsoeld" guide shack. I think Whittaker was the guy at the extreme left in the photo.
They were both institutions in northwest lore. Both Whittaker and Unsoeld were founding partners in the original R.E.I. co-op. (I still have my co-op card, before it became REI Inc.).

Initial damage report (w/flashlight). Lots of silver maple limbs down - neighbors.
Redbud by northside fence, split three ways, it's kindling material. Raised it from a volunteer sprout.
Well, good night all.

Heard the chat/view idea but did not speak up since I will be out of town.

What was laid on the breast of Thorin when he was buried under the Lonely Mountain?I'll hold off for a bit to see if anyone else wants to answer... ;)

It's fast approaching midnight here, so I'd better get some sleep.
This has been a great evenin' folks! Thanks!
It's ended a day that has had some good stuff happen, so now it's perfect. :-D
My grandfather woke up and was clear and lucid for the first time since he went into the hospital on Memorial Day weekend.
He couldn't speak (intubated), but he acknowledged what was being said by nodding, grabbing hands, etc.
His condition is not by any means improving, but I consider it a real blessing to have him come back to us for a bit. No matter how long it lasts.
Love you guys! Nighty night!

Who was King Under the Mountain, during the time of the War of the Ring? Dain Ironfoot, cousin and heir of Thorin.
Why was Merry's sword effective against the Lord of the Ringwraiths?
Gotta go to bed now. Maybe we can take this up again in the morning.

Have a good night! I won't be around in the morning, but perhaps one of the morning crew will take up the challenge...

Anyway I liked Ruthy's suggestion that we watch one film a weekend for the next three weekends. Then those who miss one week won't miss the next.
Do you have access to the Hobbit Hole Yahoo group? That's where we do the 'chat' part of the view.

Got back from Roanoke not quite an hour ago. Just windin' down afore I go to bed. Got another meeting (same kind) tomorrow night in Fredericksburg. But that's only an hour north.
Oberon - welcome. I don't know the answer (question doesn't matter).
