*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Actually, if I'm going to wear pants, I want jeans. They seem the coolest, temp wise.

You would think so but it is probably otherwise. I have a mare that we've taken to the library several times who loves people, especially kids. She stands like a rock while they pet her and kiss her on the nose. She didn't move a muscle when a man came up to her in a wheelchair, or an old vet that hugged her crying.

One of our geldings (her son) is the same way and has gone to other non-profit organizations as well as had autistic kids here, climb all over him, pet him and poke him. It's like the two of them enjoy the pleasure they bring to the kids and adults alike.

The gelding, by the way, will play hell with a cowboy, bucking or rearing up, stopping short or just not moving. He's got a great sense of humor :)

Duchess, I don't want to go back and peruse the whole site, so can you repeat again about the plastic baggies? How do you hang them? Is it only water in plastic bags? Thanks a lot

My mare is a real "people horse". She lets kids hang all over her and is SO careful with them. When a little one is riding her she picks up and sets her feet just so, and if she feels them begin to lose their balance she will actually shift over sideways to catch them. When they're jumping crossrails she just slithers over.

When people see her on a cross-country course, they don't believe she's the same horse. She can get kind of fiery when she's jumping . . .

I have a picture of her with her head in my lap - she had new shoes and was feeling sorry for herself, so she lay down in her stall and looked pitiful. I went in and took her head in my lap and comforted her (in a somewhat suspect tone). Everybody started laughing, and somebody took the pic. It was cute. Then we went and soaked her feet in tubs of cold water, and she felt much better!

Maybe it's just the way it was written then . I really am behind pet therapy and at first I though this was great but when I got to the part about retiring when they could take no more it seemed sad. If you have an animal that basks in the attention that's wonderful but I was just thinking that wouldn't it be better for the horses and the kids to teach them to not run up and "poke"?

I'm making good time this morning. Trailer hooked up and everything ready to go. I just have to load Harley then we're off to town to practice. I should be back here by 10:30 and have time to ride Rusty before the heat hits.

I found out it is suppose to be 103 Thurs when I go ride at Arrowhead:(.

See you all later, have a nice morning.

Morning......are you familiar with Funtime RV Outlet? They are located 15 miles West of FT. Worth. I could not remember if you were close to there or not. There is a nice fifth wheel on eBay they have up for bid.

Good morning, I just fill ziplock sandwich bags about 2/3rds full of water and set them on the bannister of the porch. Last night we put a safety pin through one just under the ziplock and pinned it to the windchimes so the cats couldn't knock it down.

I'm amazed everytime I look and there are no flies.

It would be much nicer of kids learned to not poke horses but so many of the kids visiting Disneyland are inner city type kids - closed they ever get to an animal is the pet cat I imagine. And something about horses just fascinates kids and adults alike.

It was all right. He doesn't like going by himself, hollered all the way there:). But he was fine when we got there. I warmed him up then set up the barrels and loped it right off without walking/trotting it first. That's how it will be at a jackpot. Then I went back and worked on our weak spots, then made one more lope thru and we did pretty good. We're no speed demons, but we're correct.

Thanks:)

I'm glad I went this morning. Mack and Charlie put a new light plug on my trailer. I guess the wiring is differnt on my trailer then what they are use too. Everything was working screwy. The lights wouldn't come one when you turned them on but ALL the lights came on when I stepped on the brakes, and the trailer brakes were engageing full strenght. If I turned the right blinker on the the left on the trailer came on:), vice versa...any way, I finally just unplugged it. I'm glad I found all this out before I took off this evening. I hate driving at night with no lights. I've done that before. But they have it all fixed now.

I got home in time to ride Rusty too. I had his shoes pulled last week, so today I put those tennis shoes on him I got and took him to the back of the property to climb a hill over and over. He did fine not even one hitchy step today. I think he's getting better. He sweated good too. Another week of this hill and I'll move to the creek hills. Then he'll be ready to be advertised. I'm definitly selling him. Would like to before winter.

I know you've struggled with what to do with Rusty. I hope you find a good home for him.

The lights issue sounds funny from here... like something out of a potergeist movie ;~D
