Help with Speeding Ticket

I just got my first speeding ticket doing 39 in a 25 zone. I rarely drive the car and I should have known better.

Since this is my first, do insurance companies raise rates for the first ticket, or is it better to go to all day drivers school?

300zx is definitely cool. I'm a big fan of the "pre-Nissan" Datsuns. I'm looking for a decent 240, 260, or 280z that I can kick @$$ in....

One of the good things about living in California is you can find one of those old relics in rust free condition. I own a repair shop in Massachusetts and haven't seen a Datsun in 15 years.

Hmmm...., just read two different reviews of the 260z. 1 had it 0-60 in 8.8sec. The other had it 0-60 in 9.9sec. Big discrepancy....

well, I'm in California of course, and I'm sure it does vary by state and jurisdiction, but here, when you get your ticket, you wait for a copy of the ticket from the courts to be sent to your house. At that time, you can pay the "fine" amt (amt they charge for the infraction) plus an additional amt in order to attend traffic school. At that time, you send the fine amt (mine was $129) plus the fee for going to school (additional $39) and send it to the courts (here you can also pay that online via the courts website). They then send you the paperwork authorizing you to go to traffic school by the courts in order to have it taken off of your record. They give you a list of traffic schools that they accept. It is then your responsibility to follow up on that, call the school and make your appt if you go to a class, online just register, they vary in price from $14.95 - 25.95. You pretty much determine which school you go to, of course it has to be off the list of accepted schools. It's a very lengthy list though, usually. I know it is here. It doesn't get you out of paying the fine, unless you fight it in court (which is a pain to do if you have a regular normal life), you'll have to do that. But paying for them to "let" you work it off in traffic school is the benefit that doesn't let it affect your insurance rates.

Who says you have to lie? You just don't need to incriminate yourself. They're the ones with whom the burden of proof lies upon. They bag hoardes of people at random when the aggregate traffic body is moving above the limit and the truthful response is "as fast as everyone else was" there.

I do see your point. However, just because everyone else is driving like a maniac is no reason that I follow the flow. Rather, I pull over to the "slow lane" and wonder where are the cops? This is especially true when I am going 65 and some yahoo passes me in the breakdown lane.

Or just ask them if they'll hold your beer while you're looking for your drivers license.

A lawyer would cost a lot more than the ticket or the increase in premiums.

In my case this was not so. I received a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt and the lawyer got it dismissed - no fine and nothing on my record. In a strange way, it felt better to pay the lawyer her fee ($75.00) than the pockets of NYS.

A lot of the PA law-enforcement officers are now equipped with radar-detector detectors and will pull you over for having one on. My brother's a Chief of Police in SW PA.
