Don't read this thread if you don't want the spoiled... you have been warned. If you have seen it, feel free to discuss it here.
Yes but Obi Wan often communicates with R2 by name (model number, whatever). Especially in Ep. III when he is calling for R2 to mess with the elevator and such.
I'm thinking Obi Wan would *have* to remember a droid like R2.
I rooted for the Sith all the way.
Are you talking about the holigram(sp?) obe wan was watching?
If you are, I thought it was showing where Luke killed all those creatures that were on Palpatine's side. He wanted to get rid of all of them and sent Luke to do it.
I liked him better in this one. His face had some age on it.
I'm glad they killed the Jedi. I was rooting for the Sith.
Pardon me...Anakin. The hour is late.
I'll gladly fork over the $ for this. It's ridiculous to only see movies by W fans--are there any in Hollywood?--but it's equally wrong to pretend Lucas hasn't made numerous jabs at Bush and the Iraq war, from commenting that "in the 70's we were selling Saddam WMD," to the "You're either with me or against me" line in the film.
Egads, the last two pieces of garbage were ALL backstory, and little STORY. I find this hard to believe. How much backstory do we need in such a simple tale?
You know you're a Star Wars geek if you can get through that. ;)
It takes us eight years to design and build an 1100 foot aircraft carrier... the Death Star is 102 Miles in diameter... how much longer would it take to design and build an object with 2,144,000 times more volume????
OK, if you say so.
MSNBC:While Star Wars fans squabble over whether Revenge of the Sith contains any anti-Bush messages, one central figure has weighed in on the debate: Hayden Christensen, the actor who plays Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.
"When the Ottawa Sun asked Christensen if the flick takes metaphoric shots at the war-mongering politics of U.S. presidents Richard Nixon and the two George Bushes the star answered: Absolutely.
He went on to say that he thinks that some people who werent American allies in the Iraq war will love Revenge of the Sith because of it.
I think for that reason the French will be really responsive to it, Christensen said. I think theyll get it. Theyll get the political commentary and the subtext. Anakin says: If youre not with me, youre my enemy! I think theyll love it.
AP:Pushed further on the current Internet chat about the war in Sith being akin to the current Iraqi war, Lucas said, "When I wrote this, Iraq didn't exist. We were just funding Saddam Hussein and giving him weapons of mass destruction."
But, he added, "the parallels between Vietnam and what we're doing in Iraq now are unbelievable."
What a dump of a movie. Save your money and wait for the DVD. Empire Strikes back is still the best of all 6...but Sith is the best out of Episodes 1 and 2 (althought thats not saying much).
Bad acting, great special effects, no emotion, decent story, numerous plot holes, no punch (its like eating a steak without the A1 sauce), just overall bland.
Anakin: You are so beautiful
Padame: Its only because I am so in love
Anakin: No because I am so in love with you.
I wanted to stab em both. What a joke...I dunno if the actors are so bad or the script and directing are that bad (me thinks its the script and directing).
I think this trilogy was a complete misfire from the start. When he announced a prequel trilogy, I don't think people were that excited--I wasn't. It was one of those forced things--"Don't you want to see where C3PO came from?" Uh, well, NO, actually. "Darth Vader???" Not at all.
One of the most interesting things about the original films is that we came in 1/3 of the way through. It was brilliant--we didn't get the boring backstory, we just dove right into the action--literally, from the first shot.
By the third, though, Lucas was eating up all this "New Mythmaker" crap flung by Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers. His material had built-in mythic resonance, but he started plopping it on top, self-consciously, which is the death of fun. Plus, he didn't like how Kershner directed Empire, made it too dark for his taste. So in three, instead of wookies as originally planned, we got teddy bears; instead of a new threat, we got a rerun of the Death Star; instead of a battle in a lava cave (sound familiar?) we get a scuffle in a boring throne room, and so forth.
Part of this btw is Lucas no longer working with Gary Kurtz, who produced SW and Empire; I read an interview in which he revealed the original plans for Jedi--SO much better. Oh well.
Who cares how these characters came to be? Not me. The Annakin and Padme characters are DRIPS, completely uninteresting and without passion. I think the casting of Annakin ruined any chance this had to be good--does ANYONE look at him and think "Oh yeah, that guy could be Vader someday?" Lucas's idea that "anyone" can grow up to be evil is nice L.A. New Age crap, but it doesn't convince.
I'm seeing it for the spectacle. Maybe someday he'll futz around with it and make the last two watchable.
Good point. Obviously R2 remember Obi-Wan.. his memory was not erased, only C3P0's. I think he was just keeping the secret. As far as the lighsaber, Obi-Wan took it at the end of the fight with Anakin and kept it all those years. The Chewbacca plot line was lame. The universe isn't that small.
"Obviously R2 remember Obi-Wan.. his memory was not erased, only C3P0's. I think he was just keeping the secret."
I think it is highly likely lucas never even dreamed of making a prequel trilogy (having worked out a backstory outline about kenobi, vader, the emperor) when the first SW movie was made, and might have had enough sense then to know that including the droids in a prequel at the center of events (one even being built by darth vader??!!) was far beyond reasonable, so kenobi had never seen the droid before.
Ditto boba fett, who was probably included due to the characters popularity in the old movies...to the extent he added him into the first sw movie.
As you say, the universe just isn't that small.
I saw the movie last night, and Christiansen is about as credible a political commentator as he is an actor. The only worse actor I can think of off the top of my head is Chuck Norris. Christiansen is BRUTAL. He must get on his knees every day and thank God that he's tall and looks like he could be Mark Hamill's father, because he sure as Zell Miller can't act worth a maddog.
Guess what? Contrary to popular revisionism, the NAZI's were really pagan, humanist, socialist, environmentalist, elitist, totalitarian, of course anti-semitic and therefore leftist: "National Socialist Worker's Party" (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei). This is why Stalin, Chamberlain and Roosevelt got along so well with Hitler for so long.
I am well aware of the NAZI party's socialist leanings and the current accepted definitions in FReeperdom. I too also, for the most part agree with them. However, IMHO its not as clear cut as you suggest. For example: the Fascist propensity for the inclusion of Capitalist elements (Industrial and Banking) in their political philosophy don't make them true Leftists/Communists. Remember Shindler of "Schindler's List" fame, and other German business owners, using concentration camp Jews to enrich themselves? The Fascists incorporated elements of Capitalism and used them as a 'means to an end' resulting in the collusion of a Centrally-run politcal and economic system (Left) and business (Right). IMHO this is how China has slipped easily from a Communist (Leftist) society to a Fascist one, which it is today.
True Leftists usually killed anyone outright that was involved in any capitalist endeavor and ownership of property (Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, Kim Jung-Il, Castro). The Right coopted, colluded and incorporated them.
I agree that it seems that Fascists have many characteristics of classical Leftism, but the incorporation of elements of Capitalism seem to put the Fascists in a special catagory of the larger grouping called 'Totalitarianism'. Lucas in Star Wars seems to deal with and point to Fascism as the methodoolgy by which a Free, Democratic society can degnerate into Totalitarianism.
