Several years ago some friends and I stopped for lunch at a restaurant in a small French town. When we entered the place, a waitress who had obviously never experienced the positive effects of soap and water on body odor greeted us (two middle-aged couples) by snapping that there were no tables available (we could see several were empty) and that there would not be.
Recovering only slightly from the almost visible stench that the waitress spread about the room, our French-speaking friends demanded to see the manager. After my friends engaged the manager in a brief but heated conversation, the manager screamed across the room at the waitress and a table was instantly made available. The food was great and fortunately that waitress was not assigned to our table. Her occasional passing by did, however, cause one to avoid breathing for as long as possible.
This incident and the constant danger of abundant dog poop on every sidewalk and street (not to mention the cheese so pungent that it had to be tightly wrapped and sealed and stored outdoors in the woodpile overnight lest the odor permanently scar the refrigerator) still make my stomach queasy.
Beautiful country, though ....

I went to the funeral with my daughter, and it was attended by about 200 friends and family.
Harvesting his organs was -- you might say -- his last good deed. Even one speaker mentioned that's what Nate Horton would have wanted -- He didn't need them anymore.
My daughter and I looked among headstones for a while afterwards, found one set from 1918 where a family lost 5 children in 6 days, ranging in age from 3 to 10. Some real heartbreakers out there among the stones.
Mostly I wanted my daughter to see a funeral of someone she knew who was young, help her stay sober.

Hey, that's my brother!
Oh, wait, sorry..
That's a bear.
Has a sweeter disposition in the morning than the eldest of 'we three rotten kids' does.

It is what I told my daughter.
Probably both the parents were critically ill too.
Explained 'flu was short for influenza.

Right here in the middle of my neighborhood there is an old Lutheran cemetery. It is only a block long and wide. It is always mowed and has an unlocked chain link fence around it. The earliest dates are from the early 1900's and the last were WWII vets. Some of the tombstones are very elaborate and some are just stones laid in the ground. Some of them are crumbling and falling down from aging. Sad. I have spent many a lazy afternoon strolling and reading the mostly elaborate and elegant epitaths.

Cemetaries are good, The dearly departed are still among us.
