Several years ago some friends and I stopped for lunch at a restaurant in a small French town. When we entered the place, a waitress who had obviously never experienced the positive effects of soap and water on body odor greeted us (two middle-aged couples) by snapping that there were no tables available (we could see several were empty) and that there would not be.

Recovering only slightly from the almost visible stench that the waitress spread about the room, our French-speaking friends demanded to see the manager. After my friends engaged the manager in a brief but heated conversation, the manager screamed across the room at the waitress and a table was instantly made available. The food was great and fortunately that waitress was not assigned to our table. Her occasional passing by did, however, cause one to avoid breathing for as long as possible.

This incident and the constant danger of abundant dog poop on every sidewalk and street (not to mention the cheese so pungent that it had to be tightly wrapped and sealed and stored outdoors in the woodpile overnight lest the odor permanently scar the refrigerator) still make my stomach queasy.

Beautiful country, though ....
