Another producer besides Broccoli had bought the rights to Casino Royale in the 50s and never filmed it - and then when Broccoli had a hit with Dr. No and sequels, decided to dust off those rights and make a rival Bond flick.

They did it as a spoof, with a young Woody Allen playing one of the major characters.

Ian Fleming hated it and felt they took too many liberties.

Now Broccoli's successors have reacquired the rights and want to make a more traditional Bond movie out of it.

There was a serious made-for-TV version of Casino Royale made before the 1st feature film Fleming tale. I forget now whether it was Brit or American TV but I remember the actor was burly and had a flat top haircut. The image was more of a Casino tough than a suave cool guy.

Reading the book Casino Royale is rather funny now. It was the first Bond novel, published in 1954. It's apparently set in about 1953-ish postwar France. A discussion of a custom radio includes how many "tubes" it has. (Three, I think.)

Bond is cruising around in a 1938 Bentley he'd kept garaged in London through the war years. I don't know much about that car, but suspect it wouldn't be hot enough for a Bond car nowadays.

From the biographical info presented, I could figure that Bond was maybe one year older than my Dad, who was born in 1921. That makes the book Bond about 10 years older than the first movie Bond, Sean Connery, and plenty older than Pierce Brosnan. He's pretty much older than God, in fact. Definite nursing home material.

The Casino Royale Bond isn't the fully formed movie Bond, yet. There's one bit where Bond is about to order a meal. "Bond liked a good breakfast..." Fleming says. Reading it and remembering the ongoing movie behavior, I thought, "Here we go." It's six scrambled eggs, a rasher of bacon, and a pot of black coffee.
