There was a serious made-for-TV version of Casino Royale made before the 1st feature film Fleming tale. I forget now whether it was Brit or American TV but I remember the actor was burly and had a flat top haircut. The image was more of a Casino tough than a suave cool guy.

That would be the "Jim Bond" version. He was an American agent. Peter Lorre was Le Chiffre, the bad guy.

The old programme ''Playhouse 90'' is the one you're thinking of. They did an adaptation of Casino Royale' in 1955 or 1956 with Barry Nelson playing James Bond (also the answer to ''Who first portrayed Bond?'')
