Dubai World Cup
March 26, 2005 | ML/NJ

I'm watching the Opening Ceremony for the Dubai World Cup, which curiously occurs after the fourth race on the program. (The Dubai World Cup is a very rich horse racing program - the richest - held in the United Arab Emirates.) I'm watching via the Internet on a restricted link, but I think this will be shown on Fox Sports at noon eastern time.

The thing that prompted me to post was a supposedly traditional dance normally performed by men, but today (tonight in the UAE) performed by women; and performed rather seductively I might add. All of the girls that the camera focused on were quite beautiful, with long dark hair, and flowing white robes that occasionally let enough light through to reveal the silhouettes of their legs to show. Considering that this is a Muslim country I was quite surprised by this. I wondered whether these were paid foreign dancers or native women.

As I type, these ceremonies continue. Watch if you can.

One of two things i watch from that region (the other is the Dubai Jiujitsu open).

The horses are just magnificent.

Roses in May will take the Dubai World Cup. I made some nice pocket change in Saratoga with this horse. He went off 8-1 on that day but will probably be the chalk today.

Roses in May

I bet RiM in the Donn (and lost). I wouldn't take him or any other being shipped halfway around the world at such a short price. (He's 6/5 now 34 minutes before the race.) I'm not sure if I'll take anything here yet. I did take Botanical in the sprint and was pleased to see that my "place" bet was really a show bet, as he finished third.

I've been to Dubai a number of times. It's a nice place, more open to foreigners than most of the Middle East. I think on the Conservative-Liberal balance scale, it is the Arab equivalent to Kalifornia. They even have a (gasp!) Hard Rock Cafe!

Your odds are "morning line."

Right now Roses in Ma is even money. Dynever and Congrats are 6-1. Lundy's Liability (whom I might take a shot on) is 7-1. The rest are longer.

And Roses In May wins it! I have to say, this is a pretty poor field of horses for a $6,000,000 race. There are no Silver Charms or Cigars there today.
