The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'm not sure where Brown County is. What town is that?

Crushed limestone, like they put on driveway? Good for base, but I would suggest some shavings. Or a fine agriculture slag on top.

Do you have a round up club in your area? If so find out when they have playdays and take Mandy to one. I have yet to find a kid who likes to ride, who doesn't like those events.

I'm not promoting western only, but I think it's good for kids especially to get a true taste of both. Makes them better riders, IMO.

Maybe it will help her get more acustomed to the saddle.

Funny thing tho, if/when, I'd ever get an English saddle (the type Hair or Frog uses) it would be for trail riding. I'm curious as to why you want her in a western saddle for trails?

I think a western saddle is more secure for going up and down hills, spooking, etc. I can get tossed pretty easily out of an english saddle but it takes some work for them to get me out of a western saddle.

Yes, we do have a round up club nearby and also, the World Paint Horse Show starts either the end of this month or beginning of next month. I intend to spend some time out there, they are mostly western riders.

The World show, might be a tough place to start:). I was just thinking of something easy and fun where she could get more comfortable with her new saddle. Of course hours of trail riding will do that. But I was thinking being around other kids in western saddles would help get the scowl off her face:). Kids are so funny about that sort of thing. I've seen kids use to western saddle's scorn Engish and vice versa. I think it's good for them to be comfortable in both. JMO, tho:)

Yes. I give them a hard time whenever I can!

I ride both western and English and for a short time learned how to ride sidesaddle. I prefer western since I am here in the hill country, and do my riding in some difficult terrain.

Sidesaddle is very secure, even though it doesn't look it. It puts you farther back on the horse, however.

You're right, if she's around kids in western saddles she would probably get the scowl off her face. She actually likes the western riding people better than the english crowd. We've been to both types of professional barns and the hunter/jumper and dressage people are unbelievably stuck up. The western riders don't take themselves quite so seriously.

We're finally getting a little rain. Nothing much yet but it's heading this direction. And the temps have really dropped, low 80's for the high where last week it was upper 90's.

Our temps have come down a bunch too, not quite 60 here now, and the wind is making it feel downright cold. I've been wondering in and out all morning, torturing my flowers, as Mack says. He says he can hear my flowers screaming everytime I walk out the door, because I'm always pruning something:).

I was rather worried about my garden this year, it just wasn't looking very good. I think it was just the weather holding everything back tho. It's looking alot better now, and the day lillies bloomed this morning.

Hey, do you know, can you get posion ivy this time of year? I've got patches of a rash here and there and don't know what it is. I thought posion ivy was in late summer and fall.

I've never had poison ivy. If it itches, I bet that's what it is.
