This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Notice how the pony is 'parking out' in this picture, the way she does any time she's a little bit nervous. And also notice that Homer doesn't have the first clue about horse range safety ;~D
Just got in from my ride with the neighbor. Her horse did great today, didn't seem like the same horse. He only spooked once and that was when some deer jumped up out of the tall grass.
We are riding again tomorrow evening.
Becky
LOL...at Homer:)
We had 3 dogs run out and bark at us today. 2 of them were getting pretty close to the horses hind legs. Even Tina's horse didn't seem to pay them any mind.
Becky
Homer is a trusting soul isn't he? Why do you use those kind of ties, rather than crossties?
Well, it's good that he did well! Makes for a more pleasant ride... but I made all this popcorn for nothing it seems ;~D
Well a deer jumping out of tall grass would spook me too :) I'm glad you had a good ride.
I don't really have a good place to put cross ties, and I wanted them to be good and used to high-lining for camping... Now that I've used them, I like them a lot better than tying to a tree or to a post, because the lines are totally out of the way. And I've found it's a really safe way to tie... they really can't hurt themselves. If they do startle, they can run in circles, but they never sit back on the line.
I rode Harley. We did about 2 1/2 hours and he was still going strong. We did some pretty good hills too and some very rocky stuff, so maybe he will be in shape by the end of May.
He got a bit up in the bridle too when the deer jumped, but I'm not sure if he jumped because of the deer or because of OReo jumping. Oreo was behind us. I don't think Harley ever saw the deer.
We actually saw deer 3 times, but it only startled the horses that once.
Becky
I bet he'll be in shape with no problem. How long is the ride the end of May?
They are something of a chain reaction... I've often wondered if that's why racehorses run hard in races, not because of the jockey, but because they are running from ~whatever~ monster the other horses are running from ;~D
Harley will be a Novice, so we will go 40 miles in 2 days.
Becky
LOL...that scary bell:)
Harley just jumped forward one bound, but was looking around like "What".
Becky
That's good you have those horses used to being tied on the high line. Most horse camps and forests, do not allow tying of horses to trees. At least in this neck of the woods.
LOL....Homer is so cute, I hope his ears are better.
Your ride is going to be more grueling than just an endurance ride, you have the various obstacles to deal with too don't you? That takes a lot out of the rider especially in nerves.
Yeah, most times I loose points because of me not the horses. I don't like people watching me do stuff:)
The factor about the May ride that can be a problem is the humidity. It can be bad that time of year. You have to really have a well conditioned horse in humid conditions.
I know approximate distances around here too. My mare always walked 3 miles an hour, 20 minute miles. I could almost get exact by timing with her.
Becky
Talking about my ride in May reminds me I need to get my entry sent in:)
Duh!!!
Becky
:) and maybe order some electrolytes. I think they will help with the humidity, but I'm not sure - Hair may know. (I don't have to deal with humidity here)
Is the ride timed?
Well Sarah Lee looks ok today. I guess it was just a yesterday problem.
