This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yes... Although I'm not familiar with all the scoring... I understand how the timing works, with the cool down time, but how is attitude and condition worked into it?
I hope the combination of things you've been working on do help when he goes back out on trail.
Tomorrow I plan on taking him out for 15-20 minutes after the 15 minutes of cavaletti work. I "think" just after the cavaletti's his muscle that is weak would tighten up??? so that would be best to do first?? then go out on trial to further strengthen it. There will only be one hill where I intend on going. It's medium long/steep, but smooth ground.

Did you get the horse pictures you took the other day uploaded?
The horses are marked down for various things (or pulled, depending on the severity), like hydration, soreness, etc., and also if they show unwilling or unhappy about trotting out at the vet checks, getting examined and all that good stuff. To win at endurance, the horses have to be is good physical shape of course, but they have to have the mental attitude also - willing to push when needed and then calm down immediately, put up with all the other horses around, and settle down and eat and drink at the stops. I didn't realize just how complicated it gets, and am really pleased to see just how carefully riders and vets monitor the horses. LOL - some of the riders come in limping or bend over, or barely able to dismount - especially the 50 milers, but their horses are in prime condition.
No, I'm not sure why they haven't loaded them. For some reason it was taking a long time to upload. They may have given up for the night. I hate to nag them to do it, but I'll ask tonight when I talk to Jenny.

It's the competive ride I'm really anxious to see pictures of. I've only been on one so I want to see what you do.
I'm glad to know more about it. Bay did that, but he did it without me, so he knows more than I do about it ;~D. Do they mark them down by adding time penalties then? or is there a time plus a score element to it?
The pictures of your DIL's rides look about like a CTR. The ride in May has some open land/hills, and some wooded areas. It's about my favorite place of all the places I've been. Was your DIL's a one day thing or did she camp?
I need to go get my horse saddled. I'll check back in tonight or in the morning.

The first 25 mile ride I went on, when I dismounted at the end, I swung my leg over, kicked my feet out of the stirrups, and crumpled all the way to the ground. ;~D It surprised me! I had no knees ;~D
They didn't camp overnite this time. They hauled the horses up Friday night to be vetted in, then brought them home and left again at 4am Saturday morning. We didn't leave until 6am :) we were just the pit crew.
If you finished an hour ahead of every one else but came in with a lame horse who was bleeding from rough usage of the bit, etc. you'd be out of the running. If you came in later, in a heavy weight division, with a horse that was sound as a dollar, you would be rated higher than someone at the same time, in lesser condition.
Speaking of Bay, bet if you took him out on a course, he'd know exactly what to do. My old riding mare had run endurance before I got her. The one competive ride we went on, she automatically took the trails marked with the pink ribbon :) - she knew more than me.

Hair, I love the tulips, mine are starting to bloom now, but I don't have near that many..lol
Sharn, I used to watch "Victory Garden", and remember the Galloway Gardens...very beautiful. What a weekend this has been. Two of my cats, got hit yesterday. The young one (9 months), who I just had spayed, got hit sometime in the night. She hardly ever goes out, and wouldn't go near the road. The other was the goofy orange cat. He would go for walks in the woods, with my granddaughter and me, and was a real card. I was out putting down mulch in the front, and my neighbor told me the cat was laying on the road. It must have happened when I went back to the barn for a few minutes. There is so much traffic on this road, since they developed the old dairy farm. I just hate it.
It has been so beautiful, weather wise here. No rain for 8 days, and temps in the low 70's. I did go to a shoot today. Boy, I could tell I better get practicing. Didn't do very well.

Sorry about your kitties! Were they together when they were hit?
I watched Victory Garden with the old Amish looking fellow... I haven't been able to bond with the new hosts.
