*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

No, this picture was taken about 1/2 way through the second half. Tracey and Sonny were going hell bent for leather so to speak, after coming in dead last at the mid way vet check.

She rides with a friend (hers and ours) who has very serious medical problems. Anyway, they were together the first half and the girl couldn't breath well, then her horse fell (it was a brutal ride). Anyway, at the mid way vet check, the girl's horse had a sore back and that was noted. When they got ready to leave, the horse couldn't support the girl's weight, so she was pulled. It ended up eleven horses out of about 80, pulled by vets or their riders.

Anyway, 3hrs for the first lap, 1hr, 40 minutes for the second, so they were seriously moving but both of them really enjoying it.

Nope, havent browsed, came straight on here to say Hi!
We have been outside fencing (electric) off yet another pasture.
One thing I loved was that even though it was only about 60x60, we had a "maternity" ward, where Sugar didnt have to be worried about Misty who is dominent. She was safe from kicks or undue stress.
I hope that you find somewhere reasonably priced soon, then you can do what you want without your horses being targeted by the more dominent ones. : )

That would be a great idea. A lot of people used to do that, we've just gotten away from it now in the modern world. Bob and I are talking to my son and daughter-in-law about them moving out here with us - just in the talking stages right now though.

We now use the maternity ward for a dog run for the bassets. They love it! It adjoins their kennel runs, so we just needed to extend the fencing and make a gate. Worked out great! I love to watch the bassets run, those big ears make it look like they are about to take off! : D

Something to think about. Surprisingly it's my two DILs that like the idea the best. We could all have our own space but share barn, pastures, pens....

If you situated the houses in a way where your back yards were all private so you had your own space, and they were the furthest apart they could be. Then had the horse pastures, shelters etc in the middle, with gates from all sides it would work out great! You would all have your independence but also be on hand for emergencies and riding together!
Maybe we should all sell up, by a massive acerage great for riding and start a Saddle club commune! : D

This is the picture that was taken just seconds before the one I posted above. They came down from the right and then swung up to climb to the road there. I'll try to get some downloaded today that show the vet check midway - that may give you an idea of the terrain.

At the beginning of the ride - it will be up into the mountains in the background.

At the halfway point vet check - we are up on top of the mountains here.

Tracey and friend climbing up to the vet check - Tracey is walking Sonny to stay slow enough for friend and her horse.

At the end of the ride, coming into ride camp and the finish line.

Very cool. And this is an endurance 'race', like Bay did, as opposed to the competitive trail that Becky does, right?

Is it won or lost based on time alone, assuming the horse passes for soundness?

He hasn't locked up once so far. But only riding 15 minutes, he didn't have much chance too. HOpefully it' has tightened up some.

I ran into my neighbor that I rode with the other day with the spooky horse. We are going to ride here in just a little bit. Do you have to popcorn ready:)

Yes - this is not competive riding. The horses place (win) based on a combination of things. Their time of course, plus their condition and attitude at the vet checks and at the end of the race.

Their time is figured by when they pass pulse and respiration, not when they actually cross the finish line. It's the same at the vet checks. For the tirty milers, a hold of one hour, AFTER the horse is okay P&R, not based on when you get there.

Tracey rode one with her mare where she finished first, however, it took 13 seconds longer for Eygpt to get a P&R than the horse that was behind her, so her placing was second. Am I making sense there?

Beginner riders should ride with others out on trails. But, I really think horses act better out alone, once you get them past the barn. I have always felt more in control by myself then with others.
