*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well then according to that she'll foal on the 15th. This'll be her 2nd foal so I figured 327 days from 5/23/04. The 15th is on a Friday, so that's good, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if she waited until that weekend. ;o) I can't remember if the stallion's owner said that she was still accepting the stallion well that last day or not. Sometimes I think this particular guy goes ahead and breeds them again even if the mare isn't particularly cooperative, just to be sure. I don't know if it does any good or not. The guy who owns the other stallion I use is just the opposite. When breeding on the foal heat, he breeds the 9th, 10th and 11th days after foaling....period. And he says it almost always works. It did with Bluebell. The other advantage of that is you've got a pretty narrow window of when they were bred so you ought to be able to predict a foaling date pretty close. We'll see I guess. Thanks for the info!

Her breeding dates were JUNE 1, 3, and 5, 2004:)

About adding a day for each foal, do you count ones they lost. She lost one the year after Dot. This is the first breeding since then.

Duchess, I looked it up again in my horse book:) and it says normal gestation is 342 days. If you've been figureing 326 that may be why your foals seem late.

I think the 342 is right, at least for Belle, she hit that mark right on with Dot.

If I figure Belle's date at 326 that makes her due, April 27.

Yeah, Duchess and I were using the 326 days based on what this mare did last time she foaled. Now my other mare, Bluebell, went 341 days on the money the last time, so I'll figure her differently.

I am so sorry, I thought that post where Duchess said to figure that mare at 326 was addressed to me.

That is so sad about the foals......I don't know what I would have done if something had happened to either mare or foals. It doesn't bare thinking about.....
It is a very nice swing, we got it from Lowe's (our second home) and it wasn't expensive. I am always out for a bargain, and when I saw it I dropped Clangers about how much I would surely LOVE a swing like that! It worked! : D
What with being so busy this past year, we haven't had a moment to put it up, but when deaconjim asked me what I wanted this year and I said my swing put up.......I got it! : D You can see for miles, I can see the horses, the pool, the kids swing set, the dog run etc. It is so peaceful and because it is so very high up, mosquito's don't appear to be a problem.

I love porch swings:), My grandparents had one. They had one of those big high front porchs that faced a busy street. I loved sitting out there on the swing and watch traffic go by. My cousins and I liked to get it going so high we could touch the ceiling with our feet:). I use to sit on that swing for hours, and sing:)

We have one of those swings that are on a stand with a canopy on our patio surrounded by my garden. I sit out there alot in the mornings and evenings watching the hummingbirds.. Altho, I do miss my coffee now out there in the mornings.

I did get Rusty's 15 minutes in today. I slid a like a 2x4 under each end of the cavaletti's to raise them just a bit. You think I'm pushing too much. I just don't see how that little bit of exercise every other day is going to do anything. He is doing it fine, no lock up's.

No, I don't think you're pushing it doing that. You need to do whatever will make him lift to step over them. If he's not over-reacting to just the poles any more, then raise them.

And, IMHO, I think the excercise routine she recommended is way over on the conservative side for him. If it was a painful condition or an injury he was recovering from, that much caution would be prudent, but she may have him starting at the very low end and I think you can use your judgment if you think he can do a little more. They can get sore from a lot more cavaletti work because it uses different muscling, but fifteen minutes every day of that (and I'd more correctly still call yours ground poles unless they are raised up a foot on crosses) and I can see value in a nice short trail walk also if you want, either before or after.

That's what I'd think.

HHUUUMMM, maybe I just learned something. She said cavaletti's. Would you have understood that to mean "raised"ones. I thought cavaletti's were just on the ground.

With nary a thought about what would happen if one or both of the screws pulled out. I wouldn't have either, but it gives me the shakes thinking about it now. I did the same kind of careless things when I got my first horse. I thought nothing about riding him down the side of a busy 4-lane highway, across bridges no less! I've always heard that God looks out for children and fools. I don't know which category I qualified for since I was 20 yrs old, but he was definately looking out for me! ;o) It's a wonder I lived to adulthood. There's no way I'd even THINK about doing that now!

I can remember the adults watching us talk about the screw in hooks coming out, but, my grandfather was a carpenter, and he always said there was no way that swing was coming down. That swing and those hooks are still there. Probably been hanging there for 80 years.

Yeah - caveletti means 'raised' to me. Poles on the ground I'd call trotting poles.

You can mount your poles to crosses, and still turn them around to get lower or higher, depending on the length of the crosses. A little less than knee high would be as high as you'd want to go and still have him just walk it. Higher than that is probably too much. He'd likely want to jump it.

Well that makes more sense, that would make it more of a work out.

Learn something new everyday.

I guess I'll show this picture to my son, and see if he can knock me some "x's" together before he leaves today. I think we have some lumber out there he could do it with.

I may go out there myself, since it is raining, nothing else much to do, Surely I could do that.

I've noticed that too. I wonder if mosquitos have some kind of altitude limitation. They don't seem to come out over the water either. I live close to the Tennessee River and when I've been out on a boat at night there weren't any mosquitos. Strange.
