She's a curmudgeon. It brings her happiness, I guess.

Deaf voters voting in a singing competition is hilarious, true. Good one.

Someone said upthread that Vonzelle's dog died that day and that's why she was crying.

I would think that her family would hold off telling her about the 12 year old mutt's demise until AFTER the completion of the contest.

But what do I know?

I saw that about her dog. And that is a sad thing, and I'm like you, I can't figure out why they would tell her, OR why Paula would even ask her "How you doing" the way she did. She was setting her up to have a crying jag. The whole thing stunk IMO:).

And also, IMO:), Anthony did better then all the others that night and especially better then Vonzell. I didn't like either one of her songs.

Becky

This has been a great thread! Kudos to you for being a great host.

I appreciate that, but I should be thanking you and all the other good Freepers here for making this thread so much fun and such a joy to participate in. Being host is just icing on the cake :)

Howdy, Wolfstar :)

There is definitely more than a touch of prima donna about Vonzell. I could easily see her getting into a snit about something and then falling back on a good old crying jag -- the best weapon many young women have for getting their way.

I was thinking the same thing, but I didn't want to get flamed for saying it :) My antenna has been up ever since it was revealed that she "doesn't talk on Mondays" and replies to everyone with a written message. Pffft, what a diva. Add that to her cutesy-tootsie schtick on Tuesday night and her surprisingly calm audition tape that aired last night and you've got all the ingredients of a manipulative phony. Most everyone here can see through her act, so I'm hoping the AI voters will, too, and kick her loose next week.

I agree! And welcome to the thread :) Would you like to be added to the ping list?

Thanks for the heads up to the Kelly Clarkson article. I went over there and read it. You're right, it is a good article.

I'm not sure what I think about the blonde hair though. She was so cute as a brunette. But I guess these stars need to constantly change their look so people don't get bored.

My kids just loved the concert on Monday. My 17 year old has been to two Kelly concerts so far. She says she gets better and better.

No offense to certain "differently abled" folks, but anyone relying on CC for AI probably shouldn't be voting in the first place...

That's what I was thinking.

I sure like your post about Anthony. I'm not young, (In fact I'll be 46 on the 18th of this month), but I was just crazy about Anthony.

He has more to learn of course, but I heard and saw lots of potential in Anthony. He has a nice strong, clear voice that really appealed to me.

My opinion of Bo is the same as yours as well.

Fantasia has put out an album recently, but it's not doing all that well from what I understand. I agree, she's getting very bad advice.

I was never a Fantasia fan. That voice of hers was just like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I posted the lyrics to her latest song, Baby Mama last night. She's a very bad example to young ladies I think.

I saw that audition when the aired it the first time, but I never made the connection between that and the Vonzell we have been seeing.

You're right, she looked and acted much older.

She's a cute girl and she seems very sweet. I just thought Anthony was better, so I was disappointed last night.

I'm so glad to see that you guys liked Bailey. (now that I know who you were talking about!)

I wanted to BE her when that show was on.

I wonder why they don't just assign individual phone numbers to each contestant at the beginning of the show?

They shut down phone numbers each week anyway, so it seems like that would help avoid this problem.

I'm sure there is something I don't understand about the way this is done though.

Latest update from Billboard re Kelly Clarkson: Her single "Breakaway," is now the 2nd longest consecutive #1 song on Billboard's AC chart behind only Celine Dion. That's truly heady company Kelly is keeping these days.

Chart Beat
Edited by Barry A. Jeckell. May 12, 2005

THIS ONE'S BY THE GIRLS: Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" (Hollywood) is No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart for the 11th week in a row. That's the longest consecutive reign for a solo female artist on this chart since Celine Dion set the all-time record of 21 weeks in 2002 with "A New Day Has Come," the longest-running No. 1 in AC history.

Since Dion's record-setting rule, there have been seven chart-toppers by solo female artists. Clarkson's "Breakaway" is tied with Faith Hill's "Cry" as the longest-running No. 1 by a solo female artist since Dion's "New Day." [However,] Hill's "Cry" had a non-consecutive visit at the summit.

Here is a summary of the No. 1 AC hits by solo female artists since 2002, in order of longest stretches on top:

"A New Day Has Come," Celine Dion (21 weeks), 2002
"Breakaway," Kelly Clarkson (11 weeks consecutive to date; on track to be #1 next week), 2005
"Cry," Faith Hill (11 weeks non-consecutive), 2002
"This One's for the Girls," Martina McBride (nine weeks), 2004
"A Thousand Miles," Vanessa Carlton (seven weeks), 2002
"Forever and for Always," Shania Twain (six weeks), 2003
"Beautiful," Christina Aguilera (five weeks), 2003
"The First Cut Is the Deepest," Sheryl Crow (two weeks), 2004

In addition, Kelly's "Since You Been Gone" spent 7 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Pop 100 chart, and it is now #2. Kelly's newest single "Behind These Hazel Eyes" has been flying up the Pop 100 chart and is now #10.

Hi Becky. I'm glad you decided to join us. This is the best thread on FR, thanks to our terrific host, silent_jonny, and all the nice people that are posting here. Even when we disagree, it's still nice and pleasant.

I'm in agreement with you about Anthony. To me, his voice is clearer and more pure.

Vonzell is a cutie, but to me, she's not as good as Anthony.

I liked Scott's voice too.

You are absolutely right about Paula helping "baby V" by asking her about her day. Of course Paula knew and she did that on purpose. Simon helped her too, but not giving her a critique just because she was crying. If she wants to get a "job" as a singer, she's gonna need to learn to set her emotions aside.

Having said that though, I do think Vonzell has a better voice than Bo. Someone earlier on here said Bo is a one trick pony and personally I agree.

But Bo does seem to be a nice guy and I'm glad he has (apparently) gotten over his drug problems.

I wonder why they don't just assign individual phone numbers to each contestant at the beginning of the show?

Then folks wouldn't have to watch the show to find out what the numbers are to vote for their favorite.

Hi kevkrom. I just wanted to jump in here so just a second.

Yes, we have picked our favorites, but in most cases, at least in mine, we pick who WE think is the best or has the most potential, or whose style personally appeals to IS the most.

That's very subjective and it is different for each and every one of us.

So while we have our favorites, it's not necessarily based on who is the cutest or the popular kid etc.

It's who musically appeals to us and with the acknowledgment that even our favorites have good days and bad days. Each of them have talent and voting based on one song seems unfair in a way. At least for me. I wouldn't vote against one of my favorites, just because they sang one song poorly.

Remember, most of us don't have your educated ear for music. (Especially me.)

I just vote for who touches me personally.

You mentioned the prejudices that are present no matter how a singer might sound on any given night.

That's true to some extent. Scott Savol suffered the very worst from that sort of thing though. I don't remember if you ever said any of those things about Scott or not, but many, many people here did.

Lots of people never actually heard Scott's voice because of that.

London, like Bo until last night, never had her audition shown for America to evaluate.

That really does seem to make a difference for some. Especially in the very early phases, like when the semi finals start. One of the girls voted off very early made that point. She said nobody knew her because of that.
