I wonder why they don't just assign individual phone numbers to each contestant at the beginning of the show?

They shut down phone numbers each week anyway, so it seems like that would help avoid this problem.

I'm sure there is something I don't understand about the way this is done though.

Then folks wouldn't have to watch the show to find out what the numbers are to vote for their favorite.
