You're right, I can't think of another song/performance on AI that has left such a lasting impression.

I can think of a few that left lasting impressions because of how bad they were, LOL! Anything by Mikalah Gordon, for example.

And Wolfstar, you have to listen to the "In A Dream" link--it's crystal clear and it reaffirms what you said: It's the greatest AI performance ever. No question.

Coming from a Carrie, fan that also is high praise indeed. Now let's hope both Bo and Carrie live up to the tremendous promise they showed during the contest.

As much as I had a hard time liking Carrie toward the end of the season, I am an AI fan and will be rooting for her to do well. I'm also quite capable of warming back up to her if she puts out good music. I just want to listen to something that touches my heart. Not much to ask for my $15 or $20, or whatever the price will be.

Bo has a chance at some real hits in the top 40 stuff if he can get and decent or better material. IMO, his career is ready to go NOW!

I totally agree. As mentioned in another post a few minutes ago, however, Clive Davis said today that both Carrie and Bo will be recording their albums very soon, before the AI summer tour begins. That means that neither artist will get much chance to seriously think through their song choices and other aspects that go into making a top CD.

I know most of us don't like Fantasia, but here's some interesting news about her. Currently, she on tour as the open act for a dude -- someone named Kem (who I never heard of) who has released four albums. All Kem's albums sales together probably are comparable to Fantasia's debut sales of around 1.4 million. Yet Fantasia and Kem together can't sell out a venue that accommodates only 2,000 people.

The real question is, why is Fantasia opening for a relatively unknown artists instead of either co-headlining with another, better-know artist, or headlining her own tour? Although her debut CD and two singles have had moderate success in the hottest-selling music genre today (hip-hop/rap/modern R&B), she has been a near total bust on the big charts: Billboard Hot 200 for albums and Billboard Hot 100 and Hot 100 Pop for singles.

Here's an interesting (and hopefully tongue-in-cheek in some parts) article from MTV News. It's about Bo, but mentions Carrie.

Advice To Bo Bice: Embrace 'Beard Rock,' Change Your Name To 'Bob Ice'
by Corey Moss

Winning "American Idol" or coming in second (which, let's face it, is not that different) is just the beginning of a long fight for a career. It's a fight Kelly Clarkson's pretty much won by now, Clay Aiken and Fantasia have got a strong handle on.

Ruben Studdard is struggling...and Justin Guarini and Diana DeGarmo have all but lost.

[Wolfstar's note: I think the jury is still out on both Clay and Fantasia -- Clay because he's not working at it as hard as Kelly, and Fantasia because she seems to be limited to mid-chart or lower status in the urban genre. Not a failure, but not a true success, yet, either. Their 2nd CD's will tell the tale about their long-term career prospects.]

It's a fight that should be easier for Carrie Underwood given that she's entering the less competitive world of country pop. And it's a fight that has never been as difficult as it will be for Bo Bice, who will attempt to cross over from a cred-less show to a genre where credibility means so much.

Bo's already defied the odds by becoming the first rock singer to compete in the "American Idol" finale; can he do it again and become the first rock star with a Randy Jackson endorsement on his resume?

MTV News took that question to those who would know: real rockers.

"That's a tricky one," Switchfoot singer Jon Foreman said. "It depends on what you call 'rock' music. If you include Avril Lavigne and Ashlee Simpson, it becomes easier to survive in the rock world. But if you're talking Cursive, he'll never achieve that kind of credibility."

"It's gonna be really hard to be taken seriously," Tom Wisniewski, guitarist for punk band MxPx, added. "He's gonna have to fight."

"My feeling about Bo Bice is he's really good, I thought he was really good eons ago," countered former Soul Coughing singer Mike Doughty. "To me, credibility is bunk. I don't know what the hell credibility is. To me, music is music. People who are obsessed with credibility aren't people who buy music, they're rock critics, and to hell with them."

My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way suggested that Bo stick to Southern rock. "Maybe in a Skynyrd tribute band, maybe as a Ted Nugent backup singer, any one of those redneck bands," he said.

Or maybe Bo could actually join Skynyrd. "He's welcome to sing with us any time," Lynyrd Skynyrd's Rickey Medlocke said. "But he's got his own thing going on."

In reporting this story, MTV News showed footage of Bo performing to more than a dozen rockers. About half knew who he was (including Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and Transplants singer Rob Aston) and half of them had positive things to say.

"If it promotes guitar music, as opposed to like, bottom-of-the-barrel, average R&B that sounds like nothing, then yeah, that's great," Hot Hot Heat singer Steve Bays said. "More power to him."

"At first glance, you think, 'OK, this guy's cheesy,' but now that I think about it, he's way better than everybody else," MxPx singer Mike Herrera said. "He's like the antithesis of what you would think America's next whatever model singer would be."

"I'm very surprised to see a guy looking like that," Interpol bassist Carlos D. added. "All the guys that have been on 'American Idol' have had that sort of clean-cut look...and lack substance."

RCA Records, which will release Bo's debut, has yet to say whether he will be marketed as a solo artist — like a rock version of Clay — or as the frontman of a rock band, à la the Dave Matthews Band or even Sugar Money, Bice's pre-"Idol" band. That decision could be vital.

The other question is, after the American Idols Live tour this summer, who will Bo tour with? A rock-oriented pop artist or a genuine rock band? Kelly Clarkson or the Foo Fighters?

"I'd never let him open for us, but good luck, buddy," Grohl said.

What about other rock bands? If the music's good, does Bo's history matter?

"Everything matters, that's the thing," Switchfoot's Foreman said. "We've been selective in taking out a lot of indie bands because that's who we feel we connect with. It comes down to music. Do we feel like we can believe in it? That's what's tricky about 'American Idol,' is the believability."

"He's welcome on our stage any day," Alkaline Trio's Derek Grant said, as bandmate Dan Adriano praised Bice's a cappella version of Badlands' "In a Dream" from the second-to-final week of "Idol."

"I think I'd probably be opening for Bo Bice," Mike Doughty joked.

As for advice for Bo, rockers offered these, ahem, valuable tips:

Don't shave. "Beards are back!" Grohl declared. "Beard rock."

"The first thing he has to do is lose his name and change it to Bob Ice," Jimmy Eat World singer Jim Adkins added. "That's much hipper with the kids. Or Bobbi Ice with an 'i.'"

Yep, I tend to agree. She does have a good voice, but she uses it horribly in that modern screaming style with 400 riffs per note that's just an excuse for lousy R&B music. Barf!

She shouldn't have won that contest IMO, nor should have Reuben won his compared to Clay.

PS: Reuben dropped what looks like 70-100 pounds in his recent video.

PS: From the first season, the AI powers that be desperately wanted someone to win who could rake in the bucks in the hottest genre in the music industry over the last decade -- the so-called urban genre. So they pushed Tamyra Gray in the first season, but she got booted early. Then they pushed Ruben, and he's been a big (pun intended) failure. So in season 3 they pushed Fantasia, and she's done only moderately well. However, Clive Davis still thinks Fantasia is going to be a big star, so there wasn't as much pressure this year to push for another candidate for the urban music scene.

But I do notice that after four seasons, no white guy has won the contest. As a white woman, that irritates me.

LOL! We both posted similar things, but our posts crossed. Again, I agree. It strikes me how similar Diana DiGarmo and Carrie Underwood are vocally. True, Carrie has a bit of a country twang and Diana doesn't. But otherwise, they both have big, powerful, smooth voices. But last year Simon's manipulation was that Diana was "too young, but acting too old." He pulled that a little bit with Carrie, but not much. The one big difference between the two young women is that Carrie is truly beautiful, while Diana's looks are more average.

Kimberley Locke, who finished 3nd in season 2, also has a similar voice. They never pushed her as hard as the pushed Ruben, because her style is not "urban."

Clive Davis is supposed to be the best so how come he has gotten the past few years so wrong? That goodness he is still pimping for shriekasia, it spared us this time around.

Well yeah :)

How about John Stevens singing Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" last season? That was spectacularly bad!

The real question is, why is Fantasia opening for a relatively unknown artists instead of either co-headlining with another, better-know artist, or headlining her own tour?

That's a very good question.

I'd never heard of "Kem" either, so I looked up his CDs on Amazon and listened to some sample tracks. He's a Soul/R&B singer with a voice somewhere between Luther Vandross and Macy Gray. Not bad at all, if you're into that kinda thing. His most recent CD "Album II" (released May 17) is currently ranked #68 on Amazon's music charts and has earned a solid 5-star customer rating overall.*

This could be interpreted as a sign of desperation on Fantasia's part, opening for a non-household name. Or it could be a move in the right direction. By pairing with Kem (who has a similar singing voice to Fantasia's--minus the screeching) she might be trying to reshape her career and move away from the hip-hop flop of her first album. But if together they can't get 2,000 people to attend a concert ... well. This might be the curtain call for Baby Mama.

.

*Something interesting that I noticed: All of the customer reviews that I read for Kem's CDs were intelligent and thoughtful--and spelled correctly.

But several--not all--of Fantasia's reviews were barely legible. Like this one for example (the caps are not mine).

"Shriekasia," LOL! I agree. Davis' continued pimping for her spared us this time around and opened the door for someone different, like Bo and Carrie. Up until this year, country music was dissed badly on AI, for example. I still remember Simon's sometimes nasty comments to Josh Gracin because of Josh's country style.

It sure was. I get John Stevens and "John Peter Paul Whatever" mixed up. You know -- the short guy who can't sing a lick and danced like he was drunk or something.

Or if Kem is with RCA (I don't know who produces his stuff), maybe its an attempt to boost his career. Either way, it doesn't seem to be working.
