*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Remember that 30 y/o pony I was telling you about last year that was so hairy? She was like the curly spots on George except that she was like that all over.

Hi, tuffy -- I am not aware of anything like this from the Schindlers. They are, in fact, quite reticent to ask for funds or any other thing! I wouldn't want to respond to such an email solicitation myself -- any time I have sent a donation, it has been via check only to the address mentioned on their official website, http://www.terrisfight.org

I'll pass the email info on to the people at Terri's fight and let you know what they say. Thanks for posting it.

I don't watch NG. Gravity and age can be really cruel.

Here's an update on this strange disease

Am I qualified? This is a perfectly reasonable question and the answer is absolutely not.

I am just a horse owner who was trying to find out what happened to his horse.

However, I posted the original set of symptoms at the request of a veterinarian just two days ago.

Here is that story. I have taken out the names of the vets for posting, but can supply them on individual request if they agree.

We lost our PMU mare to this syndrome and my vet was very puzzled. The necropsy results were negative for everything. I was told it was a "one-of", and began to accept that except that two other mares had similar symptoms and recovered when my vet prescribed Naxcel. I have previously posted this whole story. As it turns out, I was incredibly lucky to save those two. If my vet had not taken blood we would never have known there was an infection and they would certainly have died.

Next I was asked to contact a Dr. BBB in Rockbridge VA. who was trying to determine the cause of death of three horses at a single stable there. (multiple horses are a pattern)

The symptoms were remarkably similar and the necropsy of one had also been inconclusive. She was determined to find the cause and asked if I could put feelers out to my groups. My first email was simple a list of symptoms and a mild warning that we thought we were dealing with an outbreak of botulism.

I did this the day before yesterday and have been totally inundated. I was up until 5:30 AM just reading the emails. Many emails start with "Oh my God" and go on to say that I have just described the deaths of their horses. The strange turning of the head, the weird stretching hop, and other symptoms are quite unique. All were misdiagnosed and the existing necropsies were all negative.

I have consulted with my veterinarian who is Dr. WWW of BBB Veterinary clinic in Blacksburg VA. He is extremely willing to educate idiots like me, but also very open minded. As I went through the findings like multiple horses at facilities, the grouping in time (last 60 days), and the geographical grouping, he became more and more convinced there was something new going on here.

I told him of my alarm and he put me in contact with Virginia Tech. I had a long conversation with Dr. VVV there who had done the necropsy on Whisper and he agreed that it is serious enough to raise to the authorities. I sent him the alert sheet just hours ago (5PM 3/2/05).

Dr. PPP at Virginia Tech is the state vet for these kinds of things and is on travel today. I have simply stumbled into something and want to pass it along to the proper channels now that the pattern has emerged.

If your veterinarian would like names and telephone numbers of these veterinarians please say so and I will ask their permission. I am sure they will be willing to respond.

WWW attended the two mares who survived so he would be the best one to talk to. Dr. BBB would be the second best. I can also forward to you a few dozen emails that match these symptoms precisely if you would like to read them. I will extract the names of the people unless they agree to be identified. Some of these have posted publicly on the yahoo group PMURescue, so please read those first as I am very swamped.

I am anxious to turn this over to the right people, but the urgency is so great that I felt compelled to raise the alarm in hopes of saving a few horses. At least four have died of this since I first raised the question.

Well, popups happen wether or not you have spyware, really, but they can be attributed more often than not to spyware. Especially the porno ones that you keep talking about. Getting Mozilla or Firefox will stop them because they have a popup blocker feature. Are you running a firewall? It doesn't sound like it, and if you aren't, I'd suggest downloading the free version of Zone Alarm. It too will stop popups, but will also stop hacker attacks, trojans, most vruses, (unless you allow it past the firewaill) and what have you. It's a good thing to have.

I'll try zone alarm, and thanks for the suggestion. I got another one of those nasty pop ups this morning, after not getting any all day yesterday. I ran McAfee to check for viruses and came up blank.

I sent that information about the horse illness to the vet tech that works in my vets office and she hadn't heard anything about it. She said if anything was going on like that in Texas or surrounding states, the vets are usually notified by the Texas board of animal health. She'll take the info to the vet this morning and get back to me.

Zoonotic meaning being able to pass from the horse to a human? Tetanus can't be passed that way per my vet textbooks.

LOL...well I am suppose to ride with my crazy neighbor today:)

She's alot of fun, but extremely annoying in that she is never on time, and 99% of the times we have arranged to ride together, she calls and cancels, way after the time we have set up. I have learned not to wait on her. As rude as that sounds, I have missed riding numerous times waiting on her.

It usually takes about 20 phone calls to get a ride together with her. She called last night and asked if I was riding, and set the time at 1:30. Then told me she was riding a new horse that she has never bitted, her husband does it, and so if she has trouble she will call and ask for help. Now I'm locked in and can't take off without her:)....Then she called bad about 30 minutes later to say she had heard it was suppose to be only 40 for the highs. I hadn't heard that, but told her to wait and we'd see:).

This is the lady that gives me the info on the other lady with the POA, and the same one I posted pictures of last summer who came and rode the Arabs with her husband and son.

She's kind of looney, but I like her, she's fun to watch:)

Becky
