The Hobbit Hole XIX - Tomorrow we may come this way...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 01/27/2005 9:59:05 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Tomorrow we may come this way...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

*sigh*

I know I shouldn't bash Mac users twice in a day...but this is another interesting one.

We had one of the part time faculty come in a few days ago to complain about an upgraded system we'd installed in the P/T office. Since the Mac factory default mice cost a LOT more to replace and because the second button DOES work if you plug in an ordinary two button USB mouse (and it's mighty handy!), we've been using regular optical mice on some of the Macs that aren't in labs - the labs have to look symetrical, so it isn't an option there.

So...this guy comes in to say he needs a mouse. We said "we just barely set up that office - are you sure there isn't a mouse in there already?" He says "Yes, but it's one of those" - pointing to a Microsoft optical mouse with a mixture of fear and disgust - "I don't know how to use one of those!"

At this point the media guy had to leave the room, as he was either gonna strangle the guy or burst out laughing. The other tech explained that the other button and the scroll COULD be just ignored if he didn't want to use it - just use the left button as you would the one button on a Mac mouse.

"But," the guy STILL protested, "Mac mice don't HAVE buttons!"

I gotta hand it to the other tech...he managed not to laugh and just explained that the way they're made, the front of the mouse is a button. It IS a button, though.

I don't think the guy was really satisfied, though. He'd prefer a hockey puck to alternate mouse buttons.

[sigh] This guy hasn't even been a Mac user for very long, then.

The scary thing is...he's a professor, teaching graphic design or some such ON Macs.

I guess he has a short memory.

Much better! But I was sleepy this afternoon, so I laid down for a while. I'll try to get to bed early-ish tonight, and I should be fit for tomorrow.

And how are you, Master Sea-Man?

teaching graphic design

A digitizing tablet must *really* mess him up.

If it wasn't a shared office and if we had 'em to spare, we woulda located a hockey puck to give him.

Man, I hate those things. Whoever let that outta the design department at Apple should be shot.

LOL! I can't even imagine. It'd be funny to give him one, and watch him try to figure it out. I'm thinkin' hidden camera. Bwahahah...

I'm unhappy, because Macs are starting to pop up here and there in the department - two of the professors are Mac cultists - and I'm afraid we're going to be required to start supporting those things sooner or later.

Still feeling lousy?

Oh yeah. When I signed off earlier, I went and sat down in the living room. I didn't move again until I just posted.

My head hurts. I can't breathe. I ache. And I'm dreading the return of the cough. When I got up my temp was 99.7, but I think it was higher earlier.

There's always WinME, with no updates. The Miracle OS. If it boots... its a miracle.

They aren't all bad. I just get frustrated because they don't seem to be as logical as the PCs. I mean...if we have a problem with ONE PC crashing in a particular program, it's generally a hardware issue, if they're all set up the same. Otherwise, they'll ALL have the same issue.

The Macs don't seem to play by those rules, though maybe it's just us. In the main Mac lab, for example, one may crash in Illustrator, another won't connect to the server, another beeps (but doesn't give an error) when opening Indesign, etc. Makes no sense.

But I've learned a lot about 'em during my time at the college, and I'm glad for that. And I admit to a secret desire to play around with an iBook for a few weeks, though I dunno that'd I'd wanna spend the big bucks they cost to purchase.

Yet another thing that shouldn't have been allowed out the door. *shudder*

I've very rarely had to deal with it as I didn't ever have it on a home machine, and at work we went from 98 clients to 2000. Whew...
