The Hobbit Hole XIX - Tomorrow we may come this way...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 01/27/2005 9:59:05 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Tomorrow we may come this way...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Not sure it is a splash screen, I think those were only changeable in Win98/ME. It can be disabled in WinNT/2k (and that is not recommended), but I haven't found a way to change it. Not sure about XP, I haven't used it yet.

But I think I have run into this before. If the wallpaper is set via Active Desktop, there will be a momentary delay before it displays. During that delay, whatever is set on the background tab in the Display Properties is shown. IIRC, that is. The problem is ~somewhere~ in that vein.

Oh yeah? You're probly right about that. Went spelunking around for the splash and couldn't find it. Haven't tried such a thing in ages.

yah... I think it can be disabled via the /sos switch in boot.ini (I think?) but couldn't find the living quarters of the screen itself.

Oh well... your hint about the active desktop is probly right on. I hadn't thought of that. Despise active desktop, I do. Despises it. Turns it off we does, everywhere we finds it... :-)

Oooh, mystery series? Were they any good? Would Blockbuster or something have them?

My anime club is planning the yearly Friday Night o' Anime. It's scheduled for April 15th... I was thinking you'd be around in time but you'll be up to your brother's wedding by then, right? Oh well. We did vote on t-shirts and got a really cool design, so I'm going to get one.

It's my own original artwork. I have the original here:

I'm having trouble collecting royalties, though.

On Win98 they were called logo.sys, logos.sys, and logow.sys. And they couldn't be jpgs, they had to be 256-color bitmaps 320x400 pixels. Made a nice set of LOTR-related ones back when I had Win98.

Oh dang... that blows the joke. The other one didn't show up for me either.

I'm trying to collect royalties on the little red "x" picture.

Evenin' folks. Thanks for all the prayers and concerns. It's been a wild ride.

Ruthy told you the most important stuff. Nana's doing okay tonite. We'll have to see how things are tomorrow. Doctor indicated to me that there may need to be some follow up. At the same time I got the sense that he didn't think another total replacement was a viable option.

I've got to write a book you know. Wife was on the phone with 911 and had to call Jr. to take over so she could go throw up.

Because of the way things happened I had none of Nana's paperwork, but the hospital had it all. Still the woman at registration chastised me. I wanted to tell her "Okay darlin' we'll both go to my house and get what you need. You can hold the puke buckets whilst I get Nana's purse...or you can scroll down on yer flippin' screen..." But I didn't.

I got thru to the church and one of our Pastors stopped by while I was still waiting. That was appreciated.

I saw Nana in recovery before she was taken to her room. She was out of pain and in pretty decent spirits.

Had to run by Wal-Mart 'cause tomorrow is Luke's birthday and we were gonna take care of stuff today. Still need to make one more stop tomorrow.

I also picked up some Shrek "Scratch and Stink" valentines for him.

I'm exhausted, but still wound up...

bitmaps? crud... dang... could swear I saw... oh well... I'm batting .000 tonight. It's a good thing I don't actually have to *fix* computers anymore. I'm simply not qualified. :-)
