It's rather wet here today. No local flooding, though.

So tell me about hamsters. My Jeremiah wants a dog so bad, but he can't have one per the landlord. I've never had one nor did my kids. Can you take the darn things out of their cages and let them run around? Do they like petting like a cat or dog?

You can .. but I wouldn't recommend it .. those buggers can run fast ..

I would recommend using one of these if you want to let it run around

It's easier to grab them when they are in one of these and will cause less damage to the animal when kids chase after it when it takes off

Hamsters aren't high maintenance but their life span also isn't very long

I never let Dana get one before now because that part didn't sink in and I wanted her to understand it all first.

Good morning! I bought the extended version of ROTK for my 18-year-old niece, and she really enjoyed it!

No flooding here, either. The local forecast calls for rain the rest of the week though. Ugh. We need to get busy and get the sump pump installed under the house. We've found that we have standing water under the house later in the rainy season. Nothing yet, but if we have a wet winter, it'll collect. We have a huge hillside behind our house, and it appears that the water flow causes a lot of water to collect. We also think that the French drains around our place aren't working, and we'll need to put in new ones. Ah, the joys of homeownership.

I have a vague memory of the huge earthquake in Alaska in the 60's, at least having seen photos of some of the devastation. I hope we don't have anything that huge on any of the faults over where I live. If something like that happens, I hope I'm not on one of the Bay Area bridges or one of the freeway overpasses at the time.

LOL! I hadn't thought of it that way, although I have wondered why they're referred to as "French" drains.

Hi Loddy,

FWIW, I found a copy of that original earthquake bulletin
I saw when the earthquake happened, Wretchard at Belmont Club also picked up on it. It reads:

TSUNAMI BULLETIN NUMBER 001 PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER/NOAA/NWS ISSUED AT 0114Z 26 DEC 2004 THIS BULLETIN IS FOR ALL AREAS OF THE PACIFIC BASIN EXCEPT ALASKA - BRITISH COLUMBIA - WASHINGTON - OREGON - CALIFORNIA.
.................. TSUNAMI INFORMATION BULLETIN ..................
THIS MESSAGE IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY. THERE IS NO TSUNAMI WARNING OR WATCH IN EFFECT.
AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0059Z 26 DEC 2004
COORDINATES - 3.4 NORTH 95.7 EAST
LOCATION - OFF W COAST OF NORTHERN SUMATERA
MAGNITUDE - 8.0

EVALUATION
THIS EARTHQUAKE IS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE PACIFIC. NO DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS BASED ON HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA. THIS WILL BE THE ONLY BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE. THE WEST COAST/ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE BULLETINS FOR ALASKA - BRITISH COLUMBIA - WASHINGTON - OREGON - CALIFORNIA.

On 0204Z 26 DEC 2004 a second bulletin was issued. It concluded that there was still no danger to the Pacific. The waves were only minutes away from Phuket and the rest is history.
