The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Wow.... real shelves...

I remember when a milk-crate shelving system just couldn't be beat.

Yes, but you were rich if you had a telephone spool coffee table...

It was funny... one of those Ramius-shopping moments...

Got the nightstand. It came assembly-required. No problem. But it turns out that my leatherman screwdriver wasn't gonna work... needed a regular long shaft screwdriver to fit the deep set screws. Fine... go to hardware store... get screwdriver. (Note: I've got enough tools at home to outfit an aircraft carrier... but of course I don't wanna start carrying tools back and forth) but then I think well... better get a couple of different screwdrivers just in case I need them around the 'partment. Oh, and a hammer. and... a crescent wrench, maybe some pliers... a flashlight... and now I need a toolbox to but all this stuff in...

A hundred and something worth of tools later... I had the screwdriver I needed to finish putting the nightstand together.

[sigh]

Heh, family down the street from my parent's house had one of those big empty spools as a picnic table in their back yard.

Some friends had one with a beer tap coming through the big hole in the middle. Way cool. They even insulated the keg in the middle and had wrapped it in copper tubes and the guts from an old refrigerator. Classic.

Note the rope to keep it from floating away.

I'm *still* miffed that we lost that great big log that was settin' there for so many years.

'Nite folks.

We're leaving for Kentucky sometime late tomorrow afternoon. I'll be around in the morning, then it'll be iffy until Saturday or Sunday.
