The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Miss Cat hasn't even noticed the weather but she did look a bit puzzled at the car being indoors.

You got the garage cleaned out!

Got close to 60 here today. Just as long as the weather's good Saturday when I fly back...

BTW - weird lady never showed up today about the dog - yet, and it's about to get dark.

This is why I used to double book my case management appts in Social Services.

I got to thinking about the differences between Theoden's speech, and Aragorn's, outside the black gates.

Aragorn's speech was based on hope, even if it was a hope that he couldn't speak openly. The troops he had with him had already seen themselves saved from utter defeat several times by superhuman effort by the good guys. They were standing in front of Sauron's front door so they could spit in his Eye. Things were desperate, but Aragorn spoke about hope beyond hope.

When Theoden and his troops rode over the ridge and looked on the Pellinor fields, it was instantly clear that they would be wiped out if they attacked. But he reminded them that they had sworn oaths that bound them, and there was glory still to be won. There would be nobody to survive who could sing of their glory, but they would kill the enemy by the tens of thousands before they were brought down. And they would strike fear into the hearts of a moronic enemy which was specifically bred to be so stupid that it could not comprehend fear.

Aragorn's speech appealed to the heart with hope, and evoked a cheer from his troops as they entered battle. Theoden's speech was about fulfilling oaths, and killing varmints simply because they need killing. Defeat was certain, and the proper battle-cry was simply, "DEATH!".

Aragorn's speech made me cheer at the charge, too. Theoden's just grabbed me by the throat.

This is why I used to double book my case management appts in Social Services.

We never made appointments. My old people never went anywhere and when we were doing Child Protective Services, the element of surprise was usually to our advantage.

Oh, you were one of those evil people who takes kids away from parents who haven't done anything wrong, they just got a little drunk?

True... It would.

I was doing employment/self-sufficiency counseling stuff. We offered them no cash or much in the way of supportive services, nor were they compelled to be in our program, it was voluntary, so they were free to put me off if they didn't feel up to it. Many did... so I double booked to fit in requests even if my calendar looked booked up. I had a 50% no-show rate so it worked out fine :~D

Actually, I don't remember having any homeschoolers. This was, after all, the early 80s. We did get after a few moms for not making sure their kids were in school.

I was mostly backup for the CPS stuff. Most of the time I did adult services and for the last few months I was there, foster care. For a while I was the only male in the agency (other than the janitor).

Then Lou came along. He took my caseload for a while after I left. Then he was sent away for some extra-agricultural activities...

Extra-agricultural? Animal or vegetable?

Yeah, the homeschoolers "back then" were far between and kept their heads waaay down.

Heh...I'm gettin' ready to take Luke upstairs for his bath as soon as Nana gets done in the bathroom.

A houseful of new toys and he's discovered this box of letters he's had for two years is magnetic. So he's putting them in order on the refrigerator and thinking up words that start with them.

He just found the letter "P" for which he knows ~one~ word.

Yep. That one.

Something tells me this is not the last time you'll say that. :-)
