The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Swirly thing is to check out the color. And sediments. No?

I prefer my red wine just slightly chilled, and my white wine at room temp.

Heheh!! My "Cholesterol Medicine" is Woodbridge Red Zinfandel!

Natural cholesterol medicine! Along with my blueberries, black tea and almonds, I have maintained a total cholesterol of less than 200 for over three months!

No statins for me!

Apparently a common side effect of red wine is a headache too, for lightweights like myself!

the Kerambit's big cousin, The Civilian, can eviscerate a Mumakil...

Eyes are also a good target for reverse-curve blades like that.

The traditional karambit is a fixed-blade knife, double-edged, and has to be carried in a sheath. That ring on the bottom is the key to its deployment, and either the index or pinkie finger can go there, depending on the moves you want to make.

The karambit is most definitely a martial-arts item, and requires practice to do more than the basic slash/eviscerate. I have a blunt all-aluminum practice karambit that doesn't do any damage to me, except getting whacked on the wrist a little hard when I really spin it. It has potential as a non-lethal weapon that can do things that even a nightstick can't, like using the blunt hook-end to convince someone to get out of a car seat.

Another nice feature of the Spyderco folding Karmbit is that it has nice pointy areas on both ends when the blade is closed. Helpful for pressure points, or just to punch someone in a vulnerable area with.

kewl...

muh eyes are waterin' jest thinkin' bout it... love them pressure points and nerve bundles... I've discovered that nuthin' buckles the knees faster than a diagonal, downward strike tuh the atlas joint... if'n yuh kin get at it... ceptin' maybe a shot tuh the kidneys...

slash tuh the eyes or face izzuh quick attention getter... course, when it gets nasty, leavin' 'em trying tuh hold their intestines in makes fer an easier E&E...

Yeah, pretty much. And we don't have the Christmas stuff down inside.

It's always interestin' takin' down the plastic nativity. Something either with a bulb or a wire, or with the sand bags I put inside to weigh them down.

You know that Christmas is officially over when you find yerself pickin' sand out of a camel's butt.

Picked Sam up at the doggie spa today. He stayed there whilst we went over the river and thru the woods.

Looks like we're gonna have to go the sedation manicure route. He won't let' em trim his nails.

Here's the only knife I ever found. I was helping Marl run the Bloomfield Open Hunt dressage show, and since the teenage volunteers never showed up (as usual), I was bringing in test sheets from the dressage rings.

I was walking back past some of the stables when I noticed a small chip of reddish barn-wood in a dried-up tire rut. My brain went into Monk-mode (even though the show did not exist yet), and told me the chip of wood was out of place, since there were no red barns there. I kicked it free from the dirt, and noticed it was an extremely precisely-shaped piece of wood.

That told me to pick it up. It took a few seconds for me to realize it was a mud-caked Swiss Army knife, a Wenger, in fact, because of the square recess where the shield once was. I don't know how many trucks and trailers ran over it, or people and horses stepped on it, but I was the only one who recognized it as a knife.

It must have been there for weeks or months, because the innards were caked with mud as hard as concrete. Hours of blasting it with my ultrasonic cleaner took off the surface mud, but didn't touch the stuff inside. It was impossible to open any of the blades.

Over the course of six months, I'd pour penetrating oil onto the pivot points, and eventually the main blade started to open a bit. I kept at it until I could get the blade halfway open.

From there on, I attacked the mud-concrete with dental picks. That, and more ultrasonic blasting, got enough junk out to start slowly working on each blade. It's now as cleaned-up as I can possibly get it, and everything works, but not too smoothly.

The plastic is all hacked-up, the aluminum liners are somewhat corroded, and the polish on the blades is shot. But it can still take an edge, and still do what it was intended to do.
