The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

It sounds to me like in the book he's got a case of sour grapes: "Who wants to ride a stupid horse, anyway?"

I think we're not going to have an actual thread...just mutually encourage one another - and nag. ;-)

In the movie he is portrayed in TTT as not being a good rider. He gets on and has a hard time getting the horse to go during the warg attack, and he falls off at another point.

Yes, even though I slept through TTT at Entmoot, I have seen it. ;-)

I got the impression from the movie that it was a dwarf thing that he didn't want to ride. Not just that he wasn't a good rider, or that he didn't want to ride such a great horse.

I don't remember him saying outright in the movie that he didn't ~like~ to ride. Remember a scene? Maybe we'll all have to watch again ;~D

Gimli didn't consider himself worthy enough to ride such a great horse.

In this context, however, I took "great" to mean "very large in size" rather than "noble".

Plus, it may be a Gimli thing, rather than a general dwarvish thing.

We'll probably start the serious nagging after the new year...

Me too...which is why I wondered if it could be that it was a big horse rather that a sturdy little dwarf pony.

But he was kinda in a bad mood anyway at that point, wasn't he?

I'm here! Steve took the jedis for a hike.

News helicopters have been flying over my house all day going back and forth to the explosion site. Two people who were missing are now confirmed dead. No other major injuries. A miracle, considering that the explosion was felt for 30 miles and knocked people off their couches within a three-block radius.

Lots of debris...windows blown out and such.

No, we didn't. If you go to this site, you can see the City of Tulsa in the NE part of the state...

I live in the dip of the river directly under the V in the slanted word RIVER. The same river continues on down into Muskogee.

Muss-KO-gee (gee as in Gus)

I had forgotten about the two dog angle; dogs don't really pay attention to separate food bowls!

Our younger cat, Annie, used to leave Louise's canned cat food alone. Annie was rescued by the vets up the street and was raised on dry food. However, since I have started adding a nutriental supplement to Louise's food, Annie keeps wanting to eat it, and there is hissing and growling galore when Annie approaches Louise's food bowl!

I think I accidentally helped hijack that other thread.

I didn't mean to! Honest!

Home. I'm thinking about doing something with curry in the crockpot tomorrow. Not standard curry, but using curry paste.

Of course, we're having Thai food for lunch, so maybe it'd be too much of a good thing?

Nah...

What dog food do you use for yours? I think my little dog has the same problem. It doesnt matter how often I bathe him, a day later he is still stinking up the place. I dont know if its because he chooses to roll around in things or what, but if its food allergies, Im willing to give it a try.
