Do we have to hit the site to see why, or will you summarize for us? Why fire him?
Frank, is that you? I hate our new offense as much as anyone, and think Callahan could be the equivalent of OU's Schnellenberger, but even I admit that we need to give Bill at least 1-2 more years to prove himself.
As my Husker husband says
Gobi Gred!!!!
This is a crummy start.
Sorry about that; I'm still trying to figure out this "posting" thing. Anyway, the web-site points out that Nebraska (or rather, the athletic director) got rid of one of the winningest coaches in college football.....and for what? I am not young, but I NEVER expected to see the Nebraska Cornhuskers fall to the subterranean depths we have. It is an embarrassment; even a 7-7 record looks "good" now.
Next time I post, I should do better, but thanks for your patience.
Fire Steve Pederson? No. Stupid idea.
Hey Frank, I know that you're still mad about being fired and all, but this is a political website.:)
FYI..this should go under General/Chat...or if you plan to keep it going..under Bloggers....regards..
How long has Callahan been there?
Frank Solich was a poor recruiter and a lousy coach. Callaghan was faced with trying to field a competitive team out of several weak recruiting classes in a row. Joe Daly isn't capable of quarterbacking a decent high-school team, let alone Division 1A.
Callahan is a buffoon. He tosses away 30 years of success to install his "system". Now, they've had their first losing season in almost half a century. Is that going to help him recruit players to run the West Coast Offense? Why would they choose Nebraska over WINNING big-time programs to come play for this loser? This is the same guy who called his Raiders the "stupidest team in football", and had his players in open rebellion, threatening him with physical harm. Under his "leadership", the entire Nebraska team is in chaos, with the O-line and the quarterback screaming at each other during the Colorado game. He and the AD should both be run out of town on a rail.
Nothing against Callahan, who just follows orders. Sure, he needs a chance and all that, and we're all willing to give him that chance.
The bigger issue is the guy who made the decision, the guy who gave the orders. I think most Nebraska fans are mellow about Callahan, but hot about the athletic director, who presumes to be God.
Just curious was the AD was supposed to do then? What do you suppose Solich's record would have been this year and what bowl game would he have taken them to?
One can only speculate what "might have been," but it is reasonable to guess that Frank would have had better than a 5-6 season, and would have taken Nebraska to some medium-sized bowl game (right now, even the blue grass in Boise looks pretty good).
Nebraska is one of the smallest states in the union, with a major college football program--in population, even Kansas and Iowa are giants compared with us, and Oklahoma even bigger than that. Given our small size, it was always unreasonable to expect a national championship more than once every twenty-five, fifty, years.....but it was eminently reasonable to expect at least a top-notch, high-quality program.
As for previous comments about Solich being a "poor recruiter," the facts as outlined on the web-site contradict this. It all appears obvious that Steve Pederson wished nothing less than to be God, to re-make Nebraska football in the image of.....Steve Pederson.
And it ain't pretty.
I agree with your fire Steve Pederson.com and after he gets fired, please fire Callahan! He has reached the bottom of coaches I really don't like and that speaks volumes.
Thanks from a Soonerfan aka Hillbilly per Callahan! What an idiot -- he is the laughingstock of the Big 12 with all of his comments. He sure isn't into tradition as he didn't know why people threw oranges at our game. Obviously he has not embraced the Nebraska traditions or he would know.
Good Luck!
How did you guys end up with Callahan? And to think Solich was trashed for winning ten games and not living up to Nebraska tradition. I would say Callahan is your John Blake (horrible coach of the Sooners before Stoops), but then he is on your staff now too. You also have one of our offensive coordinators from that era on Blake that was fired.
Well, PhiKapMom, I am still stung by the rude, crude, discourteous, boorish, uncouth, unNebraskan way in which Frank had been fired last year (and as for the individual who asked, "well, if he was so good, why isn't he coaching anywhere?"--Frank never wanted to be anywhere but here, and one assumes he has a good enough nest-egg stashed away that he can pick-and-choose, or not choose at all).
That said, despite that we have been denied the awesome talents and skills of one of the winningest coaches in college football, we have to be fair, and give Callahan a chance; after all, he did not fire Frank; Steve did.
Just leave Tedford alone. I've paid enough of my sons college at UW to pay for his 1st years salary.
Frank Solich has spent a lot of time in Norman this summer and fall getting to know the OU football program. He is a total class act.
