The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Good luck, Miss Hair.

Here's an old joke:

Smith climbs to the top of Mt. Sinai to get close enough to talk to God.
Looking up, he asks the Lord, "God, what does a million years mean to you?"
The Lord replies, "A minute."
Smith asks, "And what does a million dollars mean to you?"
The Lord replies, "A penny."
Smith asks, "Can I have a penny?"
The Lord replies, "In a minute."

I dunno, it struck my funnybone for some reason...

I've had CDs arrive from Amazon the day before the official release date.

So maybe you WILL get it early...

I probably won't be able to buy it until after Christmas, but I can at least rent! And I'm counting on at least one sibling purchasing it...

When I say not ready I mean 'have not seen any of the related classes' not ready. Internet classes allow a whole new world of procrastination. I need to watch 10 hour long classes this week to catch up. At least it is not a comprehensive final. The one on monday I can probably ace without catching up on class watching. I hate finals. These are not real finals since they are basically only test #3 for the class. The best final I ever took were one were during the final I pulled a D to a B and finally figured out the most important concepts in the class. Who needs to study when it is open-book open-notes?

Heh...been there, done that. I took quite a few video courses when I was in the Air Force...had several weekends where I spent an entire day watching classes.

Luckily they weren't on truly tricky subjects. The biology one was the most interesting...most of the video material dated back to at LEAST the early 80's, possibly later. Also included a groovy sci-fi style soundtrack. I think they borrowed the Dr. Who music library...

I've read that German doctors (used to) routinely perscribe beer for breastfeeding moms. It promoted both quantity and quality of the milk. Not the cheap, overprocessed American stuff that comes in cans, but the dark German homebrew type beers.

Not that this has anything to do with anything, but my old Gaffer has gotten back into homebrewing... ;-)

I'm not much of a beer drinker (I prefer white wine), but some of the dark batches he's made are tasty even to me.

He has one batch that looks really good that should be ready Christmas day...

Heh...if I drive to Shootmoot, I'll have to see if he'll let me bring some.

Exactly... the only redeeming graces for my 7am Wednesday final is that it is indeed open-note, open-book, not cumulative, and all we've done since the midterm is first-order logic, resolution proofs, and Prolog. I'm pretty darn good at those.

Big'ol has been showing some interest in doing some homebrewing. I might have to get him a kit or something.

I guess they don't care. I remember stores refusing to sell classical CD's before the official release date, although said CD's had already been received. I don't know what, if anything, an issuing company would do about early sales.

Yep, kits aren't too expensive, and they're a good way to get started.

Dad also has a big book o' recipes and tips that I guess is the the most common homebrewer's resource book, but I can't recall the name of it at the moment.

These are not quite that out of date (funny how biology does not change much).
They are live feed from the classroom that are stored and we can play them back over the net any time we like.

Ah logic, another one of those homeschool classes that 'normal' people don't take.

(Actually it was AI... but the logic and math I learned as a homeschooler really helped!)

My little sister is taking a final in her logic class right about now. Community college, of course, she's only 17. I wish she'd go into computers, but noooo....

I adored logic. Dunno how much of it I could remember if I was suddenly faced with a test...and I've never claimed to have a logical mind! But as a subject, it was one of my favorites.

It's loads of fun! And always makes me think of Mr. Spock, who was my favorite Trek character, ever.

Hair, can you ping everyone?
Letter from the Chaplain!

Kim and my Hobbit Hole friends,

Wow!  How do I begin?  A short time ago I received an incredible knife and letter.  I was actually out of town for a few days for a conference (I think?) and when I got home my wife told me, “You got this awesome knife in the mail from the Hobbit Hole!”  I’m sitting here reading the letter again and the same chills just ran up and down my back just as I’m sure they did the first time I read this letter.

I am speechless accept to say, “Thank you.”  I am overwhelmed by your generosity and heartfelt support.  What an incredible knife!  A few weeks ago, we went to the field, and I had on my vest (that carries all of your ammo pouches, etc. though for me they are usually filled with a Bible and candy) and clipped to the outside of my vest was my other Hobbit Hole folding knife.  One of my superiors asked we, “Chaplain, what are you going to do with that knife stick somebody?”  I laughed and said, “Hopefully I won’t have to stick anything accept for an MRE.”  Some of the paratroopers get a kick out of seeing their Chaplain with a knife.

The last couple of weeks I have had the privilege of showing several paratroopers the incredible knife that you sent.  Their response was always something like, “Wow, that is an awesome knife!”

I cannot express how appreciative and grateful that I am for all of you.  Thank you for your generous support and encouragement for myself and the Renegades.  Most of all, thank you for your prayers.

May God bless and keep you as we celebrate the birth of God’s Son, Jesus!

  Merry Christmas,

  "Renegade Chaplain"
Chaplain, 307th FSB
82D Airborne Division

And more news, from his wife:

Merry Christmas

We have great news! We are moving to Vicenza - Italy in June for 3 years. Our family is so excited about the move & the many opportunities there. We will be 45 minutes from Venice, 3 hours from Milan, 3 hours from Florence, 1 hour from Verona, & 4 hours by train from Rome. [The Chaplain] will be "going out of town" when we get there for 6 months.
