The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

These days I go to big bookstores to read the manga I'm not planning to buy. It's so much cheaper, after all.

And of course to check out books I'll buy when they're in paperback. I hope Dad has already got Harry Turtledove's "Days of Infamy", I want to read that over break. Alternate history about WW2 in the Pacific. The Japanese invade Hawaii and California.

The old fittings were leaking so I replaced them. It looks like it's holding...for now.

Mmmm!

We looked at some Bugs today...found a place that sells old Bugs! Saw about a dozen. On the way we wen through the mexican part of town and ended up buying a bag of freshly made tortilla chips!

We're all stuffed on chips! Dr. Atkin's ghost has been haunting me ever since.

I did peek at the manga section. There weren't many titles I recognized, though. They did have that one you mentioned getting...Ruroni? Something with an R? Sorry! I remember ones I've seen, but not ones I haven't.

They had Escaflowne, and if I'd had lots of time, I might have at least looked through the first volume, just to see what manga is like. But we were trying to fit in a bunch of places in a fairly short time, so I didn't do more than flip through quickly.

Steve has the jedis out in the garage sorting out tools and such. I'm sneak freepin'.

I always like it when I manage to fix something myself. In the case of this oven, Steve thought he couldn't get the part because he was going to a specialized supply store that was closed on Sat and he never had the time to run and get it during the week...I mentioned "Wonder if the Sears Supply store has it." We checked...and it did!

"Rurouni Kenshin" (rurouni is a made-up word roughly translation to "wanderer")

The Escaflowne manga is hideous. It's lousy. It's bad art and worse butchery of the story. Don't bother. Most of the time, the manga comes before the anime; in this case, they tried to create a mange after the anime, and it just didn't work.

Thanks for the warning! ;-) I wouldn'ta bought it, in any case. Ten dollars a volume for something like eight volumes...eek!

Which I guess is probably LESS than most other series? Reasons why I'll probably never get into it...

Yeah, well, Kenshin is $8 a volume. There will be... 28 volumes, I think. It's not so bad when you buy them once a month, or every two months. I budget for it.

Well....it's like this.

First. I couldn't turn the cold water off all the way. The main valve (which is in the crawlspace) was turned as far as it would go and water was still trickling out the cold pipe when I loosened the tap. Hey! At least I could loosen the tap. So I remove the hot tap which I took with me to the Home Depot to make sure I get the right thing.

So I go back only I couldn't find my teflon tape or my plumbers' putty...must have left them at The House back in NC.

Noooo...problem. It's not going to leak, right? Wrong! So it's back to Home Depot for some putty and tape...just in case one didn't work I could try the other. So I end up putting the stoopid thing on twice with the cold pipe dribbling water all the while. I guess it's a good thing the washer is in the garage even with a bucket to catch the water.

BTW, I used the putty and it seems to be working.

The dough is ready. Time to put the pizza together.

Another "Andy" that I like is Andy Irvine who was a singer for an Irish band whose name I'm not sure about right now; was it Planksty? The group did a version of "Stewball" that had a driving beat and was fun, and another called "Sailing to America".

Eh...I like him as an instrumentalist, but his voice does nothing for me. I don't really care for it. I've heard him live, though - he played with Patrick Street. Planxty too, I think, and a new group now...can't remember what it is.

Yawn...

Sorry for ditching. I went and laid down and had a sort of nap. Hey, it wasn't fair, I had to be up at 8 on a Saturday!

Eh, well, it was sort of ok. I ended up being seventh instead of fourth, so I had to sit a lot longer than I thought. I made a few major errors, like saying something and then having the bullet point appear on my powerpoint. And my experiment was boring anyway.

At least I wasn't like the poor pair of guys who gave back to back speeches on using the same algorithm on the same problem and coming up with opposite results. They gave almost the same talk, too. It was hilarious.

Do you know what you got for a grade on it, or does that come later?

No clue. Guess I'll know sometime after Christmas, when the final grades come out.

The good news is, unless I really screwed up this and then also the final, I won't get less than a B. The bad news is unless I do pretty well, I won't get an A.

3.0 - that shouldn't be too hard. I hope. But I worry, of course. And too many Bs would be a bad thing...

It's an assistantship, by the way. They pay me, I work, they pay for classes.
