The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ugh...keeping continuity in a story is rough. Just had to go back and add comments clear back to the beginning in order to allow my characters to escape from a goblin prison without destroying the story's internal logic.

Without real editing, this will be flawed. Interesting, I hope...but flawed.

I'm still kinda proud of it, though.

All stories are flawed. Like diamonds. Otherwise they'd be boring.

Flawed as in there are going to be typos and places where I've missed changing wording...

We won't even go into the other flaws. ;-) At least it's become fairly original! Still includes cliches...but then, what fantasy doesn't?

See, there's a place a bother would be useful. Just have him read for spelling/grammar.

Trouble is, most aren't willing to read something this long just to help out. Stephen is fairly willing...but he's the slowest reader in the family by far. It would take him until long after the new year....

But he IS going to do illustrations, I think! Not a lot - but this being a chapter book, that's OK. Probably will just do four or five.

Tryin' to think who's a "crafty" type...

I think I may try and bind it like this:

How long is the story? Send it to me, I'll see what I can do (I used to be a very good beta-reader, and I'm still good at spotting spelling/grammer changes)

I told you I have a Fellowes binding machine! Send it on, and I'd be happy to put it together!! It will have the black plastic binding rings, if that's ok. I have some 3/4" that will hold well over 100 pages!!

Eeeh...I know you could do a good job of it, but I dunno! Promise you won't laugh? ;-)

Grr...I really need to get past feeling like that if I'm ever gonna do anything with my writing, don't I? But this is so aimed at Teresa...there are lots of frilly details that she'll like, but that are kinda...goofy.

I promise I'll read for spelling and grammer only. Heck, my stories are so stupid, most of the time...

Oh, I know, I know! I'm really grateful for this...and I may yet take you up on it. However, I'm really worried that I won't finish this until the last second, AND it keeps growing in length...so we'll see! If I print it half size (about standard book size pages), it's already up to something like 140 pages if I don't use a teeny font.

I really admire your stories, though! You have so much originality. Someday I'm gonna be able to say I "knew you when"!

Heh, and hopefully I can say "I knew you when", too!

I have a decent imagination. It's the mechanics of storytelling I need to work at.

What color are these new shoes of power?

We're hopin' they're black.

Speaking of geese (earlier, getting fat, etc. etc.), just went on a wild goose chase.

Need to get smallish presents for cast leaders and a few folks we work closely with on stage. Was hoping for something that said "old Richmond," without saying "burning tobacco warehouses" at the same time.

Gift shop at the State Liebarry is closed. Didn't know that afore I walked up there. Went to the snack shop in the Capitol. They gots a line of gifts too. Not much there.

I did find the perfect print for the woman that plays wife's Mom in the show. Perfect 'cept it was $55.

Oh well, the walk did me good.

Speaking of walking and the outside in general...

Doesn't look like we'll be seeing the sun anytime soon.

Not really...that doesn't come until January.

And honestly, this is far preferable! But...I almost wish it were a bit colder. Slushy snow is yucky.

BRRRRR....is a relative term.

But I understand what you're saying. The slushy stuff is a pain.
