The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well it's just a funkle kinda morning! Yeah, I've noticed that about Irish music. I'll see a piece mentioned on a CD, think I've never heard it, then when I play it, I realize I know it by a different name. "Star of the County Down" is like that. I knew it first as "Variations on Divas and Lazarus", written by Ralph Vaughn Williams. I know he based HIS version on the folk tune. Only after I heard his version, did I hear the hymn, "I Heard the Voice of Jesus", which is yet another variation on the theme.

Hmmm. Is this tenor banjo guy, ahem, 'available'?

There's another hymn to the tune of "Star of the County Down", but I can't remember which it is.

And the tune itself can be played either slowly and mournfully in 3/4 time or in a bouncy 4/4 time...some bands will start with one and jump into the other, which sounds vey cool.

But then, I also made the mistake of playing his banjo.

Never heard it called that before.

Heh...just because he has nice instruments you ask this? ;-)

Available as a band member or available as in...umm...single? I think the second is true at least - no ring - but considering he had a VPR sticker on his car...probably doesn't matter.

Unfortunately seems like most of the folks involved with Celtic music (as opposed to, say, bluegrass) are leftists of some stripe. But the music is fun!

What is VPR?

Yep, that's why I got out of the whistle forum. One can only walk so long on the dark side.

Vermont Public Radio - the local subsidiary of NPR.

Anyone who thinks they aren't biased is beyond help.

They do have some good music shows, though, I'll admit that.

I have a new house spider that has moved in to where Shelob used to live under my kitchen window sill. Just like Shelob, she was only the size of pinhead, but has tripled in size since she showed up. She's afraid of me right now and hides in a little hole under there when I approach...but Shelob got over that eventually (Shelob was there for 2 year before she went off and died.)

Anyway, I named the new spider Shelob.

Oh, I thought maybe it was "Vermont Peoples' Republic".

My hand hurts today - well, it started yesterday. It's a pain.

Last day of classes! Just a speech tomorrow, and two finals.... I'm happy...

Last day of classes!

Whoohooo! You'll be home before ya know it.

I just got out with a mtg with the super-uber-big-chief-muckety-muck that was just fantastic. My head is spinning. I'm putting in for a promotion and came out of that mtg feeling pretty good about my chances. Yaaaaay.

On the other hand. I spent last weekend making fudge for gifts for friends and family. It's my father's recipe and a special family tradition. One pan of fudge went to a pair of colleagues, who work in another building, and who are just first-rate, great people. I found the pan of fudge in the break room for 'all to share.' I meant the gift to be for their family for the holidays and seeing it there on the counter kind of hurt my feelings (not too awful bad, but still). Now I wonder if I should bother making fudge for the holiday party next week like I signed up to do.

I wouldn't worry about the fudge (well, personally Corin is worrying because he hasn't gotten his yet, but that's another story...).

Your colleagues could have just been sharing their good fortune. Or they could be doing Atkins. ;-)

Last day of classes here, too. It's vey quiet.

Possibly. Feels like a pinched nerve or something.

Finals week shouldn't be bad here. I hope.
