Word For The Day, Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - scrutinize
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary | 11/02/2004 | The Janitor

Posted on 11/02/2004 6:01:31 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

scrutinize \SKROO-tuh-nyze\ verb

1. to examine closely and minutely *
2. to make a scrutiny

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
Signora Bernasconi scrutinized the painting, said to be by Fra Angelico, and declared it a fake.

Did you know?
A close look at the etymology of "scrutinize" reveals that the word stems from the Latin verb "scrutari" (meaning "to search" or "to examine"), which in turn probably comes from "scruta" (meaning "trash," or more specifically "a mixture of worthwhile articles and trash"). "Scrutari" gave us the noun "scrutiny" in the 15th century, a word which originally meant "a formal vote" and then "an official examination of votes." "Scrutinize" retained reference to voting, with the meaning "to examine votes," at least into the 18th century -- and even today in Britain a "scrutineer" is a person who counts votes.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

It was delicious. Especially when they stopped trying the dinky little passes early in the game and began giving it to Curtis regularly. Made the Fish look like they weren't worth a thimbleful of John Kerry's spit.

So how come the fraudulent voters tend to vote Democrat?

Are they supporting the fraudulent candidates?

In Texas you must have an absentee ballot sent to a county outside of your home - my daughter is in Lubbock so she had to request the absentee ballot from outside of Fort Bend County and it had to be sent to her, not to her home. You can not request an absentee ballot unless you are not in your home county.

This may have changed when they instituted early voting - for example if you were going to be out of town on election day, you may have been allowed an absentee ballot - not sure.

I have no idea why we have early voting and they don't in the Northeast......... but at least with early voting they get to see you in person, whereas with absentee ballots ANYONE could mark it and return by mail........so I would think early voting would cause less fraud than absentee.

For him??? Baggy blue jeans, wrinkly T-shirt and a Nike inner city cap pulled down on his head. He offered his 3 year old daughter his "I Voted" sticker but she said no. They struck me as the type who raise their own kids. She sat patiently on her mom's lap, looking through magazines together, while dad was inside voting. Faith carried her out, on her hip.

Hey, I always leave the gradebook locked up in the first drawer on top on the left. The key is in the lunatics' lounge (teachers; lounge) hung up on the 5th grade hook. It was stolen once or twice by the janitor to have the coquettes do things for their grades, but that's why he was fired and went off with Nurse Helga. I still think Nurse Helga killed him.

BTW, Cyber went a different way to work this morning via the precinct where we vote. He saw over 100 voters there. He scrutinized and scrutinized to find someone he knew. He found her. She said overall it President Bush all the way.

We'll be voting at noon here and checking out who was naughty and who was nice.

"Looks like xs wants Dick......and she wants it NOW."

Are you sure she doesn't want Dick Clark? I mean he's been in people's business for a long time. And he's got a first good name.

If you run into the President, tell him I'd vote for him at the drop of a hat.

Both Cyber and I are precinct committeemen. That's what we do. Go to homes to remind them to vote. Also offer rides to folks who can't get there.

We get an address list of all "R" voters, with phone numbers.
