Word For The Day, Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - scrutinize
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary | 11/02/2004 | The Janitor

Posted on 11/02/2004 6:01:31 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

scrutinize \SKROO-tuh-nyze\ verb

1. to examine closely and minutely *
2. to make a scrutiny

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
Signora Bernasconi scrutinized the painting, said to be by Fra Angelico, and declared it a fake.

Did you know?
A close look at the etymology of "scrutinize" reveals that the word stems from the Latin verb "scrutari" (meaning "to search" or "to examine"), which in turn probably comes from "scruta" (meaning "trash," or more specifically "a mixture of worthwhile articles and trash"). "Scrutari" gave us the noun "scrutiny" in the 15th century, a word which originally meant "a formal vote" and then "an official examination of votes." "Scrutinize" retained reference to voting, with the meaning "to examine votes," at least into the 18th century -- and even today in Britain a "scrutineer" is a person who counts votes.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I don't consider that early voting, rather absentee voting.......for which I have no problem.

If Motor Voter were done in all states the way it is being done in Virginia, I've got no problem with it.

Changing my Delaware driver's license to VA last year was an absolute nightmare...having to prove I am a US citizen and my name and my address.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really not complaining....I couldn't get my DL or register to vote until I was able to produce a social security card with my married name on it.

Motor Voter prevents the rolls from being purged in a timely manner.

I had to show ID to vote early but I was horrified to learn that the laws pertaining to elections are only good on election day. What is up with that???

Guess who I saw when we went to vote today? Sitting in the lobby with her daughter on her lap, no makeup and gorgeous. Faith Hill. Tim was there too, looking scruffy, as usual.

To change the subject briefly, a Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission panel scrutinized old Lone Ranger episodes for a full day before deciding some Indian broad should not have been offended by her boss calling her "kemosabe". And no, it appears some Canadians don't have anything better to do - SHHEEEESSSHHH!!!!

Actually, it's a good thing for the boss the Nova Scotia petit fascists didn't find out that "kemosabe" is Navajo for "soggy shrub"!

Which I'm sure would convince all the lefties to start calling the President "kemosabe".

YAY JETS!!!

here's a good article about confidence in the machines/systems in Delaware.

No worry over Del. vote count: Tally system works 'very well'

The system does work very well - even in (the highly dem suburb of Philly) Wilmington.

Voter fraud has not been a problem there in many, many years.

Reminds me of an old Far Side cartoon.

(I can't believe I was able to find that cartoon on Google!)
