The Hobbit Hole XVI - Still round the corner there may wait...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner there may wait...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Glad you had a pretty good day!

I just spent... an hour, probably, getting the latest set of anime files to play. I am Not Asking where coworker got these, but they have both English language and Japanese vocal tracks, so it's probably illegal ;-) Anyway for some reason my player first tried playing both tracks at once (that was really annoying) and then refused to display subtitles. Finally it's working. The anime itself is visually stunning but I haven't seen enough to say about the plot.

My exciting day: I designed a learning algorithm that learns to lose tic-tac-toe; version one took 7 hours to run. I went to the department picnic and one of the professors ended up in the hospital. I played "suck up to the professor by dissing the Dune movie" (not that hard!) at said picnic, to say nothing of a little softball and getting into arguments with random nerds over whether "Escaflowne" is girls' anime or not.

"You gotta be the last one to know :)"

I figure somebody's gotta be last! :) Looks like a nice place with a lot of room for two people. That SIM drawing's kinda nifty.

I'm in the process of having an addition to the garage built. The builders laid the foundation a couple weeks ago, which is a relief because I wanted to get that in before winter came. They should be adding the walls sometime over the next few weeks, hopefully. Then I can move some stuff around in the current garage and basement and actually have some space.

For a second there I had a flashback to the days of FR where people would forget to close their tags and you'd have three pages of "italians off" posts....

I want to beam wireless Internet to the park across the street so I can sit over there on a nice day and be connected.

Park snorting?

That makes my month-and-a-half total to almost 20 pounds. (Drinking more water as we speak)

That's terrific!!

I think Dad's thinking of springing for self-sealing tires? Something like that. I don't think the local places do insurance, but it's worth looking into. He's taking the van in tomorrow, I guess.

I imagine part of it may just be tire pressure - when the temperature drops, it does a number on that and none of us (in my family, I mean) are as good at / about car maintenance as we should be. But Dad hasn't had a flat in years...whereas Margaret...heh. Poor thing...she's really paranoid now! Even just riding WITH me the other day, she was flinching and sucking in her breath every time I went near gravel or anything.

All my female cousins are teasing me this year. I get to make my first mamogram appointment after this birthday. Youch!

Youch is right! I'm due for one in the coming year, as well.

What's the new series?

Bothers appear to becoming well hooked on FMA. Even the not-that-into-anime brother was humming some of the tunes today...

How on earth did a professor end up in the hospital?

"Last Exile". Can't say what it's about yet. Airships and wars with futuristic 18th-century-looking tech.

Oh, good... they ought to like it! Everyone I know who's seen it, loves it. Which tunes? The openers are all good but only the first ending was really nice. And I love that one.

We were just starting the softball game... he took off for first base... tripped, fell, and that's where the reports get confused. Definitely banged up a finger and dislocated a shoulder. May or may not have had some sort of seizure-like episode. It was scary. We sent an undergrad running across the field to the firehouse to fetch an ambulance.

*sigh*

Only downside to today...before we all went out to the house, the one brother I've shared much of my writing with and whose opinion I trust was here for awhile. I sprung some of my story on him, and he said what I kinda knew...that one character needs to go. She isn't necessary to the plot and it just complicates things. We spent a little while brainstorming to figure out a way to make her useful, but it just didn't work. So...I have quite a bit of rewriting to do to surgically remove her from the story so far...

But I'm approaching 13000 words or so, which isn't bad considering. And I'm maybe a quarter of the way through the story.

First opening, as I recall. I think on the MP3s you sent it's labeled Melissa?

Ouch on the softball injury...

Oh, lovely. Chance of snow tonight and tomorrow. Just flurries, and it won't be anything that'll accumulate, but...

Guess it's starting!

Then there will come a day when your house will be a fixture on the flight path.

My brother used to fly C-130's for the Air Force Reserve. Every now and then, a group of them would fly down to Biloxi, MS, to Keesler AF Base. Gerry would lead them right over my Mama's house at the Fish Camp, which is just off the Gulf Coast of MS, and at the edge of the Pascagoula River.

At that point, the planes would take a right turn and go along the coastline to Biloxi. After a while, Gerry noticed that their maps all had the turn to the West marked as "Mimi's Place"

I'll bet somewhere at that base, there's a map with a location marked as "The Jedi's House"!

Oh, lovely. Chance of snow tonight and tomorrow.

LOL! I'm glad Clare took a warm coat with her to Hulbert!!

Would you still like to get together for dinner next Friday? Do you mind eating early? I know you probably can't meet us before 5 or 5:30, but we could meet in Norwich so you wouldn't have to come all the way down to Lebanon. I pick Clare up at about 1 or 1:30, and I was thinking of driving over to Waterbury to look at some kitchen appliances at the place that makes the brand I'm considering. Then I was going to go to the King Arthur Flour Store in Norwich, and we'll likely be there about the time you get off work.

Let me know if that would work out for you. I'll probably have both Clare and Joseph, because he has off school that day, and said he wanted to ride up with me to get Clare.
