The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

So, how are you going to go about introducing them to each other?

I gave up on FR this a.M. - had to go to a wedding

Nothing worse than wanting to spend tiMe with your new horse and having to get all "gussied up" to go to a wedding !!

Hair - are you building a new stall - We have an existing barn they can get under - but I haven't put in stalls yet ---- when we were letting My new baby get introduced - we put the other 2 in an old attached paddock (without a gate) and slid boards across opening to keep theM separate but able to touch noses.....

I did run out to pasture this A.M before the wedding to check on theM - noticed the bay and the new paint both have little nips on their sides but nothing is bleeding and they were all 3 grazing beside one another -

I told hiM if he picked on My first 2 - I would send hiM back .... and told hiM this place was "horse heaven".... we treat our horses like lap dogs LOL - So hopefully he will behave.... My parents are taking us all out for My birthday dinner - so I have to stay clean - can"t go out and ride even now.....

probably for the best - give hiM a couple of days to settle down and get used to the place.... Can't wait to hear all about how your new one adjusts Hair - - - Give us an update ~~

Yeah, it's turning into a beautiful day here. I should have rode. A girl I ran into out on the trails a few weeks ago and told she could park here showed up with some friends, and invited me to go. But I was on my way to town with my husband to run a few errands and have lunch. Their trailer is still here, I'm thinking about going and trying to catch up, but they weren't going to ride long.

I've been wondering from your tag line if you homeschool?

Becky

Hi Becky, Yes - I do hoMeschool - we have always done it that way - so we're in our 9th year if you don't count pre-school ..... Do you hoMeschool (sorry - still no question Mark or little M )

My daughter just went out to the pasture - said the horses are acting calM - so that's good news. I was Mostly worried about the App. - he is 14.2 and when we had theM boarded at a stable with lots of horses - he was always off to hiMself and I felt he was picked on. That broke My heart because he is so sweet.... I refuse to put hiM in that situation again - so I aM trying to Monitor My new paint and Make sure he's being "NICE"......

Hey all, checking in from the beach house...

Yes, we do have to build new stall for new horse, we are discussing today the best way to do that. May redo the way the barn is laid out in order to best accomodate 3 stalls.

We're bringing her home with the barn as-is. For the short term, she will have access to the covered lean-to on the barn if we put the other ones in. But will be finishing stall for her within the month. She comes with a good waterproof blanket just like the ones mine have... so she'll be fine.

Hi all,
Just came back from apple picking!!! Lots and lots and lots of apples!!! Yum!

Inge: I think there's a bengal cat, or a bengal cross wandering around the neighborhood. He/she was sitting in my breezeway this afternoon. There are a bunch of new houses behind me, so it might belong to one of them. Either way, really strong bengal markings. I'll have to snap a pic and post it to you to see what you think.

My children are married now, but I did homeschool them. Charlie from 5th grade on and Jenny from 3rd grade. I didn't know before that that there was even such a thing as "homeschooling:)". Best thing we ever did for our family. I'd probably be in the pen now for either smacking a teacher or a bratty kids parent.

I've just spent the most delightful several hours reading this thread (between dinner, and laundry). You all have wonderful horses (at least the ones I see in the pictures).

I would love to join you occassionally if I may. We raise Appaloosas but good horses come in all colors.

Frog in A Blender - I've listed horses on the internet and did have someone offer me full price plus additional to contract for trailering. When I said I wouldn't contract that, that was their responsibility, they disappeared. I found out later it was a scam. I have listed them on Dreamhorse.com and AgDirect as well as justappaloosas.com

cowboyway - two of my foals are Impressive bred. 2003 filly and 2004 colt. We didn't breed them, we bought both and their mother a couple of months ago. They both have really good minds.

MissTargets - check justappaloosas.com for your black and white leopard with the indian shuffle. My old riding mare was a red leopard with the shuffle. I really do miss her.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the photos and the tips I've picked up.

And welcome to the thread, stop in as often as you like!

My first riding experience was at an Appaloosa farm, I learned to ride from a leopard Appy broodmare that was older than the hills and a sweetheart.
