Can anybody out there give me a RATIONAL explanation as to why this seller tried to sell this used textbook on eBay for $85,720? I've been trying to figure this one out and just can't think of a reason. Plus this seller isn't a newbie making a dopey mistake. He has a feedback rating of over 4000. The listing fee alone on this auction must have been very high.

If I were going to pay $87K for a 14 year old textbook, I'd want free shipping. :-)
To: PJ-Comix
I'll just go to the library.

Well, shipping would be a whole lot cheaper than selling 1000 of them at $85.72 each.

Is this the biology book that explained how to use telemerase to have eternal life? Nah...gotta be a coincidence.

I used to pay that much in college - at least the college bookstore would offer me 50 cents at the end of the semester.

If I were going to pay $87K for a 14 year old textbook, I'd want free shipping. :-) LOL!!! I hadn't thought of that but you're right! This seller is charging $85,720 as the starting bid but still insists on the buyer paying $2.79 for the shipping. Hey, I often pay for the insurance on the books I sell if the bids go high enough even though I didn't offer insurance.

But, gosh, look at the shipping cost - VERY reasonable at $2.79.

Maybe he thought somebody would be stupid enough to actually pay it. A nasty divorce where the wife tries to drain the husband's bank account, a spurned lover with his paramour's credit card number, whatever.
EBay is on my fecal roster right now - a Power Seller suddenly "went out of business" and left me holding the bag for $40 worth of merchandise I paid for but never received. My CC company doesn't do chargebacks, the merchant is pleading empty pockets, and the most EBay will reimburse is $15 (with their standard $25 fee for recovery). This is of course after filling out a mountain of forms for the privilege of getting the $15 back.

This must have been a typo. I thought of that myself but the listing fee must have been ENORMOUS. I'm sure he must have seen that. Plus it wasn't a matter of getting his decimel point wrong since I don't think he would be offering it for $85.72. You just don't often see that.

The only trouble is when the buyer doesn't pay, this guy is left eating the ENORMOUS final value fee.

I tried to sell a time machine on E-bay. It was a cardboard box for a fridge that we had sitting out in the garage. One night, while drinking Wild Turkey at a party I blacked out and the next thing I remember is standing in the garage next to the box three hours later. Being drunk, I took a moment to write "Time Machine" on the box. Two days later I posted the story (with major embellishments) and the box for sale on E-bay for $1 + shipping. I also offered a free bottle of "fuel" (Wild Turkey) to anyone who bid over $25.
I was up to $40 before E-Bay yanked the sale because, as they said, "Item does not work as advertised: Box will not actually travel through time."
At least they had a sense of humor about it.

Actually I am curious where this guy gets all his textbooks that he is selling. I specialize in textbooks myself. Selling them is easy (if they are within the last 5 years of publication) but finding them is a real chore. I am like a maniac when it comes to finding textbooks but I don't get anywhere the numbers this guy does. Any ideas on how he finds so many textbooks to sell?
